Here's what people had to say about the expected hiring of D. J. Durkin as Maryland's new head coach.

Maryland will hire Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin as its new head football coach. After the news broke Wednesday, recruits, journalists and fans all took to Twitter to express their opinions. Let's check out what people had to say. [Note: this post will be continuously updated as more people unleash their #hottakes.]

Adam McLean, Maryland's former four-star recruit who left the university after an eligibility issue this fall but is expected to return, recently shared his thoughts before stating his confidence in Durkin. The team has not given an update on the status of Mike Locksley, the team's interim head coach for the final six games of the season.

Maryland's new boss comes from good coaching genes.

Because Maryland's administrators never miss a chance to raise fans' expectations, university president Wallace Loh sat with The Baltimore Sun's editorial board this fall and said the following about what he wanted in the Terps' next head football coach:

The personality to project themself well, vis a vis the boosters, vis a vis the media. You have to have an outsized personality here. It's not just knowing the X's and O's. That's why you have the Jim Harbaughs, the Urban Meyers.

In fact, Maryland's own division has both Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer. They're two of the 10 best coaches in college football, Harbaugh at Michigan and Meyer at Ohio State. Meyer might be the very best.

Maryland was never going to bag either one of them to replace Randy Edsall, but in hiring Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin on Wednesday, it might've done the next-best thing, or at least the closest.

Maryland has set Durkin up poorly public-relations-wise. In addition to Loh's earlier insinuation that he wanted Eagles coach Chip Kelly and leaks about ex-Georgia coach Mark Richt, athletic director Kevin Anderson said at a press conference after firing Edsall in October that he wanted someone who'd promote "wide-open offense" to rile up the fan base. Durkin, a career defensive coach, isn't that guy. Not by a long shot.

But Durkin does have the pedigree for a job of this caliber. He's gotten it from Meyer and Harbaugh, and from a bunch of coaches he's worked with in between.

Durkin's coaching career started as a Bowling Green graduate assistant in 2001. The Falcons' coach back then was Meyer, whose good work quickly netted him a promotion to head coach at Utah, then Florida and you know the rest. Bowling Green was 17-6 in Durkin and Meyer's two years together. He got it from three years at Stanford under Harbaugh, when the Cardinal began an ascent to being one of the sport's most consistent programs. Harbaugh thought enough of Durkin in Palo Alto to hire him as his defensive coordinator this year at Michigan. Durkin's Michigan defense was instantly one of the five best in the country.

Coaching careers can be winding, and Durkin's certainly has been. In addition to Meyer and Harbaugh, he's worked under fired Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham and total punchline Florida coach Will Muschamp.

But the point, here, is that Durkin's had anchors while he's been all over the map. He's coached for MAC defenses, Big Ten defenses, SEC defenses and Notre Dame defenses. He's had to recruit the Midwest, the South, the East, the West.

All the while, he's gotten the chance to learn lessons from Harbaugh and Meyer, and probably a bunch of other people. If you don't think Durkin is good enough for Maryland, that's fine. Maryland's athletic department gave you ample reason to expect more. But Durkin is good enough for Harbaugh and Meyer, and that, at root, is why he's being hired.

The Terrapins' new head coach specializes in defense.

Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will be the University of Maryland's next head football coach, the school announced Wednesday.

In his first year in Ann Arbor, Durkin has engineered a havoc-wreaking defense that has rated among the best units in the country. Durkin is known for aggressive blitzing schemes and explosive defensive fronts. His Michigan unit is blessed with exceptional high-end talent he won't immediately have at Maryland, headlined by cornerback Jourdan Lewis and safety Jabrill Peppers. It could take time for Durkin to find the players to suit his hard-charging defensive style. Still, Durkin is a defensive maestro.

Before becoming the Wolverines' coordinator under Jim Harbaugh this season, Durkin was the defensive coordinator and then interim head coach at Florida last year. As part of a coaching career started in 2001, Durkin has also coached defensive ends, linebackers and special teams at Bowling Green, Notre Dame and Stanford.

A Youngstown, Ohio, native, Durkin hails from a region where Maryland has occasionally been active before on the recruiting trail. He's gotten some experience coaching in the Big Ten, and his years in Gainesville give him some connection to Florida's wide base of high school talent.

Durkin replaces interim head coach Mike Locksley, who took over at Maryland upon Randy Edsall's firing in October. Locksley could be a candidate to remain on Durkin's staf.

One program donor familiar with athletic director Kevin Anderson's thinking said Maryland was drawn, in particular, to Durkin's youthfulness. He also called Durkin "a hell of a recruiter," as the coach has put together an impressive commitments list in recent years. He's been lauded for his recruiting in the past.

At 37 years old, Durkin will be the youngest head coach in the Big Ten and the 36th head coach in Maryland's history.

Running down the pros and cons for the ex-Georgia coach to join Maryland.

Maryland is considering former Georgia head coach Mark Richt to fill its own coaching vacancy. Richt could certainly succeed in College Park; his excellent 15-year run at Georgia in the SEC confirms as much. Fans seem to want him. But the far greater question about Richt and Maryland, more than Could he be good?, is Would he want the job?

Let's tick off a few points in – and against – Maryland's favor.

Why Richt would come to Maryland

Lower expectations.

Richt reached double-digit win totals in nine of his 15 years in Athens, but the Bulldogs were rarely the SEC's best team and never managed to get all the way over a national championship hump. Georgia still didn't want him back next season, even though Richt was as successful a coach as any reasonable fan or booster should ever demand. At Maryland, there's a good chance Richt would be greeted as a conquering hero. If he wins eight games per year, he's great. If he wins nine – the same total that apparently got him pressured out of his job at Georgia – he's messianic.

Maryland's perks package is pretty good.

Maryland's job, in and of itself, has a lot going for it. There's the school's close association with Under Armour, its impending new facility in the old Cole Field House, a strong local recruiting base and all the benefits that come with being a member of the Big Ten. Richt had a much better job at Georgia – make no mistake – but this wouldn't be an awful accommodation for his first post-Athens move.

His relationship with Maryland's administration.

Richt has a professional history with Maryland senior associate athletic director Damon Evans, who was Georgia's AD in the middle of Richt's tenure there. It's not clear how close the two men are, but Evans knows Richt well. The mere point that Maryland has reached out to Richt signals that Evans is open to having Richt join the program. It takes two to tango, but maybe Richt is up for it.

But there are plenty of reasons for Richt not to want the job. Let's go over those, too.

Why Richt wouldn't come to Maryland.

Burnout is real.

Richt is coming off 15 years in one of the highest-profile coaching gigs in the sport. While he's shown immediate openness to coaching again, it'd have to be the right situation for him. If he doesn't love Maryland's pitch, simply taking some time off is a totally feasible alternative at 55 years old.

Richt doesn't need Maryland or Maryland boosters' cash.

Richt has already made plenty of money in his coaching career. He's not uber-rich by elite coaching standards, but he was earning more than $3 million per season at Georgia. I have no clue what his specific financial situation is, but Richt has done well for himself. He probably doesn't need another job, at least not right now.

Miami could call him, or he could get any other open job.

This is the big one. Richt is a University of Miami alumnus, and the Hurricanes might want him to be Al Golden's long-term replacement. It's a tough sell for Maryland, going up against Richt's alma mater and also other upper-tier jobs closer to Richt's traditional headquarters in the South – perhaps Missouri or South Carolina. From the outside, Maryland isn't clearly better positioned than any of those places to get Richt. That's no reason not to try for him, but it's reason to think it won't be easy.
