Comments from a school release.

On the play of the quarterbacks during the Spring Game:

"Very inconsistent. I thought there were some things that they did well, then there were some things we had some open receivers that we missed on and some throws that we needed to make and we hung onto the ball a little too long. We have a lot of work to do with both of them, but I thought they made progress this spring. We just have to be more consistent and more exact with the things that we are doing."

On the play of the defense today:

"We kept it kind of simple. We didn't do all the things on offense or defense that we want to do. It was very vanilla on defense - we didn't blitz, we didn't do any of those things. I am very pleased with our defense in terms of what we have been able to do this spring. They understand what we are doing. They are executing really well. They had the one long run against them today that I think they were experimenting and the guy hit the wrong gap. I like the way we are coming along and as we add some more guys to the puzzle, I think we have a chance to be really good on defense."

On the play of Brandon Ross and Albert Reid:

"I think there is always competition there at running back with Brandon [Ross], Jacquille [Veii] and Albert [Reid] and we will get Wes [Brown] back in the fall. We will have good competition. We will have guys who can go in and make things happen. I think Jacquille is a young guy who is very talented, he just has to understand that you don't always have to make the big play, but I love his desire, I love his passion and I love what he does out there."

On the play of Anwaine Carter:

"I thought he had a good spring. We moved him from safety to corner and thought he seemed a little bit more natural there. I thought he got better this spring. Now he has to use the summer to get a little bit stronger, but he took advantage of his opportunities this spring. I like what he is doing there at corner. If he just puts on the weight and gets stronger, then he can be a guy to push guys for playing time."

On Yannick Ngakoue's transition to the defensive line:

"I think he has gotten better. There are still some things that he has to work on, but he enjoys that position and he has gotten better at it. He is just going to continue to get better because he is a worker. He is a guy who wants to do well. We want to get him stronger and put a little bit more weight on him, but I really like what he has done there. He has the right approach and the right attitude."

On what he saw in the kicking game today:

"I saw Brad [Craddock] kick a 50-yarder which didn't surprise me. I thought the punting was inconsistent. I know it was a tough wind when you are going into it, but I didn't think those guys got the ball turned over enough when we were kicking with the wind. Again we will have another young man, Nick [Rubinowicz], coming in and competing and all those things will be decided. I am happy with this spring in term of how it went and what we were able to get accomplished. Now it is up to these guys to get the work done on their own throughout the months of May, June and July and be ready to go when we get back in August."

On the atmosphere at today's game:

"I thought it was good. It was a great day. It was a beautiful, sunny day, a little windy. It was a great day for us. All these people came out here. We did have a good group of incoming players here and also a good group of recruits as well. Just a great day. Nobody got hurt either so now we can start our summer program, start lifting again on Thursday."

Go support your Terps!

Come one, come all to the first Maryland football game of 2015. The best news is that Maryland is guaranteed a win. The bad news is that injuries have limited key contributors including presumptive quarterback starter Caleb Rowe, and right tackle Derwin Gray.

Players to watch:

Shane Cockerille: The sophomore has gotten many reps with the first team, and should be in prime position to claim the backup position in the fall.

Damian Prince: The red-shirt freshman should be able to land a starting spot along the revamped offensive line, especially if Derwin Gray is slow in healing from his torn labrum.

Taivon Jacobs The highly touted wide receiver has had tremendous difficulty staying on the field due to injuries. His effectiveness will be key for the Terps' deep receiving corps.

4-3 defense: The Terps are transitioning to a more Big Ten friendly 4-3 defense under new defensive coordinator Keith Dudzinski. It will be interesting to see how quickly the players are learning the new system.

Most of Maryland's 2016 commits will be in attendance for the yearly scrimmage as well.

Maryland's annual spring game takes place this Saturday. A public scrimmage that ends the spring practice period, it also serves as an annual recruiting event for the program. Last season, eventual signees Ellis McKennie and Mbi Tanyi visited. This season, the Terps hope to add more to their top-30 2016 haul.

Four of the six commitments that make up the class have been confirmed as visitors for the event. Four-star Good Counsel linebacker Keandre Jones, considered the seventh-best player in the state by the 247Sports Composite, will be in town with teammate and fellow Maryland pledge Travon Stott, a three-star cornerback. Three-star DeMatha wide receiver DJ Turner and three-star South Carroll lineman Brian Plummer will also be there.

As for non-committed targets attending, I've confirmed the following visitors. We'll update this list as more confirmations come in.

Four-star Potomac (Md.) Bullis 2016 quarterback Dwayne Haskins, the Terps' top target in the class, will be in College Park. The 6'3, 200-pound prospect is considered the second-best player in the state and the fifth-best pro-style quarterback in the 2016 class by the 247Sports Composite. Maryland is currently the Crystal Ball favorite, while Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, Alabama and Rutgers are also among the schools in the running.

Three-star McKeesport (Penn.) 2016 safety Khaleke Hudson will also be there. The 5'11, 200-pound prospect is one of the top safeties on the Terps' board, and it's a position they need immediate help in. He's rated as the 39th-best outside linebacker in the class of 2016 and the 12th-best player in Pennsylvania by the 247Sports Composite. Penn State and Pittsburgh are thought to be the leaders for his signature.

McKeesport (Penn.) 2016 linebacker Tymar Sutton will travel with his teammate Hudson to College Park. He has offers from West Virginia, Army, Navy, Buffalo and Miami (OH).

Macedonia (Ohio) Nordonia 2016 offensive tackle Terek Zingale, a massive prospect (6'6, 300 pounds) with offers from Illinois, Akron, Ohio and Toledo. Maryland offered him earlier this week.

Groton (Mass.) Lawrence Academy 2016 offensive tackle Eddy Fish will be in town. Maryland has expressed interest in the 6'6, 290-pound prospect, but his sole offer at the moment comes from Temple.

Reisterstown (Md.) Franklin 2018 lineman Calvin Carroll is one of the younger prospects expected to be in town. You can watch his highlights here.

It's easier to stay home. But there are real reasons to head on over to College Park Saturday.

It's too easy to try and create narratives from the yearly spring game. Maryland's annual exhibition open to the public is the first chance fans get to see the team in action, but it's still ultimately just one of many scrimmages (and many more practices) for the team in a long spring. It's a fun time each year, but it's important to keep the game in perspective.

Fans will get to see many players for the first time (including nearly the entire 2014 recruiting class, most of whom redshirted last season). Better yet, the whole thing is free -- admission, parking and giveaways for kids and the first 1,000 fans (including posters, inflatable games, face painting, vouchers for hot dogs and more).

One more thing to keep in mind -- defenses generally perform better in these kind of things, especially once Maryland's offensive injuries are taken into account. If the Terps struggle on offense in the exhibition once again, it's not necessarily a sign that the team is doomed.

Will all that being said, here are the five things I'm most excited to see this year at Byrd. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. ET with kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.

Shane Cockerille's development

The former Elite 11 quarterback saw the field last season as a redshirt freshman ... on special teams, working on the punt block unit. With presumed starter Caleb Rowe out through the spring period, Cockerille has been taking the first-team snaps at quarterback and appears to be a significantly more polished passer as a sophomore. I'm not expecting fireworks (and I'm certainly not expecting many points), but a Cockerille that can throw a bit in addition to his powerful running ability is a fun idea indeed.

Will Ulmer

Another former high-profile quarterback prospect, Ulmer switched to wide receiver as a true freshman last season, redshirting his first year on campus. His reputation has swiftly grown, and many say he's the fastest player on the roster. The St. John's prospect still needs work on his hands and route running, but he could be an explosive weapon for Mike Locksley's offense this season. This will be the first time Maryland fans get to see him play at Byrd.

The offensive line

Tackles Derwin Gray and Michael Dunn are both injured, leaving five-star redshirt freshman Damian Prince and walk-on Mike Minter as the two players likely to see the most first team snaps on Friday. Will we see a new face at the position, like Sean Christie, or will Ryan Doyle, now at guard, play some time at his old position? The storylines aren't just at tackle, however -- Doyle has received high praise for his performance at guard during camp, and could challenge Evan Mulrooney for a starting guard job opposite returning starter Andrew Zeller. At center, redshirt freshman Brendan Moore has impressed ever since he stepped onto campus last summer, but he has upperclassman Stephen Grommer to contend with.

The new 4-3 defense

Inside linebackers coach Keith Dudzinski replaced Brian Stewart as the Terps's defensive coordinator this offseason, and a scheme change swiftly followed. That means blue-chip linebackers Yannick Ngakoue and Jesse Aniebonam (both of whom made impacts last season at WILL linebacker) are now down at defensive end, while the Terps have no lack of options at the two defensive tackle positions. David Shaw, Malik Jones and Roman Braglio are just three of the options, but expect others (like Kingsley Opara) to rotate in as well.

D'Andre Payne

The Tennessee transfer will not be eligible to play for Maryland this season, but he's been one of the most impressive players in camp and provides some much-needed future security for a Maryland secondary filled with upperclassmen. A blue-chip prospect out of Woodson (D.C.), Payne is one of the most talented players on the roster, and this will be the first chance for Terrapin fans to see him in uniform.

Gray had been starting at tackle along with fellow blue-chip redshirt freshman Damian Prince after Michael Dunn's injury. No word yet on Gray's replacement or potential return date, but previous cases suggest a recovery time of 2-3 months.

Quotes from Randy Edsall after Maryland's latest spring practice, from a school release.

On today's scrimmage:

"It was very obvious today that the defense got the better end of the offense. Now we get a chance to go and take a look at the film and find out how guys have progressed and picked up everything through seven practices, with this being the eighth practice. It is good to be out there and get after it and all those things. Now we get a chance to evaluate it and grade it, then get back out on Monday and continue to get better and develop guys."

On how reps were split for the quarterbacks during today's scrimmage:

"We came into it and said what we were going to do was let Perry [Hills] take the reps with the one's for the first half of the scrimmage and then let Shane [Cockerille] take the reps with the one's for the second half of the scrimmage just to try and even it out with the guys to get each guy work with both groups. It was all planned and something that we wanted to do."

On the performance of the quarterbacks during today's scrimmage:

"Very inconsistent today. Today is the type of day that is tough conditions for a quarterback with the weather like the way it was and the wind. That is where you have to fight through things. This is the thing that spring is all about. Now you had this kind of weather today so what are you looking to try and get done? You have to understand the situation, you have to understand down and distance, understand the elements. Now you have to be a little bit more into maybe throwing the ball a little bit shorter, dropping it down. All those things are good things that we can work on, that we can teach and can go over with them."

On how productive today's scrimmage was:

"What you are trying to find out - it is all personnel evaluation is what it is. That is what the spring is all about. Every scrimmage is valuable; every practice is valuable because you are learning something each and every time you go on the field. You are learning about all these guys and how they are coming along. That is my whole thing. Every time we go out there we are finding out something a little bit more about each and every one of the players that is out there. As I have said many times, the spring isn't where we will be the final product because we have a bunch of guys who are out because of injury, surgeries. We have got incoming freshmen who aren't here. The spring is about developing our guys, getting them better, getting them to play with confidence and to play with good fundamentals and techniques. Yeah I was happy with what took place today because our guys had the chance to go out there and get better and get a lot of reps."

On who stood out on defense:

"The guy on defense that I think is really playing well and the leadership that he is bringing is Jermaine [Carter, Jr.]. I saw some things today with Abner [Logan] that were a little bit better. We kind of challenged him a little bit the other day saying that, especially after Monday's practice we didn't think he was as focused as he need to be and we told him he needs to stay focused all the time. We started to see that and those are the things that I look for. I think Jermaine is really playing well. I think he is really taking leadership of the defense. You see him up there moving guys around and that's what you need. He has really developed as the leader of the defense, the quarterback of the defense. Those are the things we want to continue to work with him on and help him get better and grow at this spring. Today I thought he did some really good things."

On the defensive backs and D'Andre Payne:

"I think the DB's are getting better. I think they are getting a lot better from a technique standpoint and doing the things there that are allowing them to play at a high level. The other thing that I think they are doing well is they are communicating well. They are talking to each other, they are communicating, which is a big thing in the secondary. D'Andre is a guy who is working extremely hard because he is a guy who is not going to be able to participate in the fall. He is taking advantage of all his reps that he is getting this spring, some have been with the two's and some with the three's. I am pleased with what I have seen from him on the field in terms of his work ethic and picking things up that we are doing."

On quarterback Perry Hills:

"Perry [Hills] is a competitor. He is a guy who wants to do well. He is a smart guy. What he always has to do is be sharp and be right with all of his decisions. He is working at it. He is a competitor. He wants to try and play and he wants to do everything he can to get on the field to continue to challenge the other guys at that position."

On what quarterback Shane Cockerille has improved on the most:

"I think the thing Shane [Cockerille] has done is he has matured more. He is being more of a quarterback than what he was previously. I think he is still getting better at it. There is still plenty of room for improvement and that is what he has got to do. He has to get better at being a quarterback, better at making all the decisions you have to make and making them as quickly as you can."

Randy Edsall gives the latest on the Terps.

Quotes from Randy Edsall, via a school release.

On today's practice:

"The big thing about spring and what you are doing today was really the first day we really kind of got after it. You are looking to see some of these young guys that are out there really kind of going live for the first time to see how they respond. You are looking for communication on both sides of the ball. Today we lined up offsides on defense a couple of times and the same thing offensively, had some false starts and those are the things you don't want to have but sometimes you get because guys are so anxious and wanting to do things. Now we can go back in, watch the film and teach from the things that we saw. Overall, we got just about every situation covered today."

On Levern Jacobs:

"I have a lot of admiration for Levern because of the fact that even though he couldn't play last fall the one thing that he did is he really busted his tail on the scout team. He ended up making himself better last year even though he wasn't playing in games because of the approach he took to say ‘ok I can't play, but I can get better and I can help my teammates be better in terms of how hard I go and everything else.' You can see the difference in him because of that approach and how hard he worked. I think Levern is a very talented receiver. I think there are things he can do and he has proven in games that he has very good speed, he can catch the ball, he's got toughness, he's got those things that you look for. I think he has a chance to be an outstanding receiver for us this year."

On how the wide receivers have looked during practice:

"The problem that we have is we have a bunch of guys banged up. Juwann [Winfree] is out, Taivon [Jacobs] is out, Amba [Etta-Tawo] is out. I think Marcus [Leak] still has to learn to be more consistent with what he is doing. I think Will [Ulmer] has made progress. There is just a lot of stuff there that we have to get him honed in on things. I think DeAndre [Lane] has been pretty consistent, the same thing for Malcolm [Culmer]. We have to get all those other guys to step up a little bit more as we continue to go through the rest of these practices."

On D'Andre Payne:

"He is a young man who is really working hard and is trying to do all the things we are asking him to do and he has. He has made some plays out there in practice. The big thing is for him to continue to really work his technique and get better at learning all the things that are going on. He is out there competing and hustling, knowing here is a guy who is going to have to sit for a year, but he is taking advantage of the opportunities that he is getting."

On Brad Craddock and the kicking game:

"We are working with the operation. Brad is fine in terms of what he is doing. Now we need to get the holder in place and we are kind of looking at some different guys there. We are using Nick Pritchard right now as a holder. We thought about using Caleb [Rowe], but he can't really do anything out there even down on a knee. That is something that we will continue to work out and will have it all straightened out by the time we get to preseason practice in terms of who the holder will be."

On running backs coach Terry Richardson:

"Terry is an outstanding coach. He has tremendous experience, both as a player and a coach at the collegiate level and a coach at the NFL level. He is a proven developer of talent. He has had guys who have rushed the ball for quite a few yards. The thing about Terry is, he is a guy who is going to develop the running backs holistically in terms of they are going to be guys who can pass black, they are going to be guys who catch the ball, they are going to be guys who can run, who understand what is happening in front of them. We had the one today, but we haven't seen the ball on the ground really in terms of our running backs this spring. I see running backs running with a little bit more determination, getting downhill and doing the things you have to do to get positive yards."

Michael Dunn and Derwin Gray are battling for time at left tackle.

Quotes from Randy Edsall after the Terps' most recent spring practice session, via a release from the school:

On returning to practice after break:

"This is part of the mental toughness, the focus because you see today coming back who can retain and execute the stuff that we put in for the first five practices. As you go and watch the film there are going to be some guys who did a really good job today, and then there are other guys you can tell they didn't stay sharp. They didn't do the things they needed to do from the mental standpoint. It is all those little tests that you have for them and situations you put them in where they are not comfortable because as you get into the season there are going to be times where they are not going to be in comfortable situations or everything is not going to be smooth and all that. You get an opportunity to see how people will react. So today was really good."

On Perry Hills returning to practice:

"He felt good back out there. He needs all those reps and everything else. That was one thing - I thought our tempo could have been a lot better on offense. Getting him back out there helps us."

On whether Perry Hills returning to practice will put more pressure on Shane Cockerille:

"I am one of those guys that if you need to have someone pushing you to take your level of performance to a higher standard, I don't know if that is really good. You have to be self-motivated to go out there and do the things you need to. I think it is good because you don't get complacent, but if you allow yourself regardless if you are a starter or not a starter, if you are not going to go out there and push yourself and you are going to rely on someone always pushing you that is not always a good sign. It is good that he is out there and it is good that he is doing that. Shane has got to put it upon himself to say hey I have to fight to be the best that I have to be every day regardless of who is the second-team guy, who is the third-team guy or anything along those lines. That just doesn't go for Shane that goes for every position. That is what we want. Those are the kind of guys that we want to recruit - that are self-motivated. It is great that they are being pushed, but they don't ever worry about that because they are taking it upon themselves to push and be the best they can every day."

On position changes after the first five practices:

"We took a couple of guys and moved them around. We took Antwaine Carter and moved him from free safety to field corner. We took Josh Woods and moved him from field corner to free safety. We are looking at Zach [Dancel] from strong safety to free safety and Denzel [Conyers] from free safety to strong safety. Just trying to get them some work at different spots and whoever is our third-best safety is going to be in the game. Between those two, they can get some work at the other safety spot. We wanted to see Damian [Prince] at right tackle with the first group and put Mike [Dunn] over to left tackle, same type of thing."

On if he plans to keep rotating the first-team offensive line during spring practice:

"We want to make sure we are getting some of those guys work. We are really not moving the young guys. We are leaving Damian [Prince] at right, and we are leaving Derwin [Gray] at left. Now which of those two guys is the better of the two because we know Mike [Dunn] can play left and we know Mike can play right. Now it is which one of you two guys wants to be the second tackle. Now you give them both opportunities to prove what they can do and you just watch the film and see where it goes from there."

On the development of Roman Braglio and Malik Jones on the defensive line:

"Roman [Braglio] has been around now for a few years so we expect him to be a guy who can be an anchor on the defensive line for us. You can see that he is getting better. He plays with a high motor. He is tough, he is aggressive, and he is physical. He was gotten stronger; he has put on weight which is beneficial. Malik [Jones] is starting to come around. You can see him, his body is different now than what it was. Every rep that he gets out there this spring is really, really good. We have him slotted behind Quinton [Jefferson]. Just working to get him to where he can be a guy that we can count on in the fall and I like the progress that he is making. He is just going to have to continue to keep working on the technique and continuing to get stronger. I think those two guys had a good offseason and I have seen good things out of them so far."

On the play of the running backs:

"We will find out a little more Wednesday and then Saturday. Now we will get into where we will practice thud on Mondays, do some scrimmaging on Wednesdays, then scrimmage all day on Saturdays for the next three weeks. There is good competition. You have Brandon [Ross], who I have been impressed with. Jacquille [Veii] is doing a good job. Albert [Reid] is running. You have some depth and you have some competition there, Joe Riddle, so you have competition there. You have guys really working. Wes [Brown] is on the self for the spring, but anytime you have that kind of depth and that kind of competition it is going to make you better. We will see how everything goes when we really hit it live on Saturday when we scrimmage."
