Maryland made many mistakes, but Virginia was unable to capitalize.

Maryland played to lose, but Virginia managed to be worse. Alec Vozenilek missed a 42-yard field goal with less than 20 seconds on the clock, giving the Terrapins a 27-26 victory in College Park.

The Terps were penalized six times for 48 yards, but two came on crucial third downs that gave Virginia scoring opportunities. The key one came on Virginia's final drive -- gifted to the Cavaliers after Maryland's inability to execute on offense -- when A.J. Hendy was called for a pass interference Vozenilek missed the ensuing field goal, giving Maryland the win.

Late in the third quarter and trailing 20-16, Virginia threw an incomplete pass on third-and-three from their own 33, seemingly giving Maryland the ball back with a chance to further their 20-16 lead. Marcus Whitfield was called for offsides, giving Virginia the first down, and the Cavaliers were able to drive down the field and score on a six-yard Kevin Parks touchdown, giving them the 23-20 advantage.

Maryland repeatedly struggled to cover Virginia tight end Jake McGee, especially on third downs. The most sensible matchup for the junior, safety-turned-linebacker Matt Robinson, missed the game with a shoulder injury, leaving dime back A.J. Hendy as the player tasked to the Virginia star.

The Cavaliers succeeded on eight of 18 third down attempts, with four of their conversions coming by way of receptions to McGee. The tight end finished with eight receptions for 114 yards and a score.

The Terps were finally able to stop the Cavaliers on third down with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but the punt hit a Maryland player and Virginia recovered at the Terrapin 17-yard-line. Cole Farrand made a huge play on third down on the ensuing drive, forcing a Virginia field goal to make it 26-20.

With the ball and around seven minutes to play, trailing 23-20, Caleb Rowe found Stefon Diggs for a 21-yard gain on a slant pattern. On the next play, he pitched a ball to Brandon Ross that missed its mark, considerably, resulting in a 12-yard loss. After an incomplete pass, Rowe launched the ball downfield to Deon Long, who caught it in double coverage for a 47-yard gain to bring it to the Virginia 13-yard-line. Two plays later, Rowe found Dave Stinebaugh in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown. Brad Craddock hit the extra point, making it a 27-26 Maryland lead.

Virginia's ensuing drive began with a two-yard loss on a pass to Parks. He ran for five yards on the next play, and Virginia targeted Jake McGee on the third down play. Isaac Goins made a phenomenal play to break it up, giving the Terps the ball back with less than four minutes to play.

Maryland got the ball back, but was unable to get a first down and gave Virginia one last shot. After an incomplete pass to McGee, the Cavaliers got a first down. The Terps were able to force a third-and-12 at the Cavalier 25, and an incomplete pass to Swanson turned into a first down thanks to another huge Maryland penalty -- this one a pass interference on A.J. Hendy. Poor playcalling by the Cavaliers saw them play to the long field goal instead of going for the touchdown, and Vozenilek was unable to come through, giving the Terps the win.

Virginia took an early lead on two Vozenilek field goals, but the Terps grabbed the lead thanks to some Brandon Ross heroics. The running back took a screen pass 77 yards, and scored two plays later on a one-yard dive over the end zone to make it 7-6.

Ross scored again midway through the second quarter, with a seven-yard run to increase the lead. On Virginia's next drive, David Watford found tight end Jake McGee for a four-yard touchdown after some nifty scramble work, bringing the Cavaliers within one.

Two more Terrapin outside linebackers suffered injuries in the game -- Yannick Cudjoe-Virgil and Alex Twine, Robinson's back-up.

Vozenilek hit a 27-yard field goal before the half, giving Virginia a 16-14 lead. Maryland took it back early in the third on a 36-yard Brad Craddock field goal, and a 32-yarder from Craddock made it 20-16 late in the third.

A slow third quarter saw just six points -- two Maryland field goals -- as the Terps enter the fourth quarter leading Virginia 20-16.

Maryland's offense started the second half on a notably hot note -- Caleb Rowe found Stefon Diggs for five yards before a seven-yard rush for Brandon Ross, and then Rowe completed an eight-yarder to Deon Long. On the next play, Brandon Ross ran 30 yards down the left sideline. Two plays later, Ross ran for eight yards, but a Rowe pass to Diggs fell out of his hands, setting up a Brad Craddock field goal. The Aussie hit the 36-yarder, giving the Terps the 17-16 lead.

The Cavaliers were given good field position on their next drive thanks to a solid return by Darius Jennings, and Kevin Parks burst free for a 19-yard run two plays later. A false start on another potential big gain by Parks stalled the Virginia drive, and David Watford made a crucial mistake when he elected to forego a potential first down, juking to the left and getting stopped instead of powering forward for the needed yardage. Virginia punted the ball away.

After a few uneventful drives back-and-forth, Albert Reid contributed to Maryland's success on the ground, taking the ball up the middle for a 38-yard gain. On third-and-13 two plays later, Rowe scrambled up the middle for 19 yards and a huge first down. On the next play, Rowe found Diggs on the right side for an 18-yard play where Diggs somehow managed to keep his feet in bounds. The drive stalled on two incomplete passes from Rowe, and a pitch to Diggs resulted in a loss of yardage, forcing another Craddock field goal. He hit it from 32 yards out, making it 20-16.

Some stats:

Caleb Rowe - 14/27 for 250 yards

Brandon Ross - Nine rushes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, two receptions for 79 yards

Stefon Diggs - five catches for 75 yards

Brandon Ross has continued his banner day, but repeated mistakes by Maryland on both sides of the ball have left the Terps trailing 16-14 at halftime. Ross has seven touches for 123 yards and two touchdowns, but Maryland has struggled in the other phases of the game.

Virginia started the quarter with the ball in Maryland territory, and were unable to get out as the Terrapin defense forced a punt.

On the first play of Maryland's next drive, Stefon Diggs did his thing. Caleb Rowe threw a poor pass down the field intended for Deon Long, and after Anthony Harris deflected it, Diggs found his way there for the 39-yard catch. After being sacked on the next play, Rowe made another bad throw -- this one tipped by Maurice Canady -- that found its way into the arms of Levern Jacobs, who caught it for a 17-yard gain. The Terps showed a new wrinkle in their offensive gameplan, as Albert Reid took a direct snap in the Wild Crab for a 20-yard touchdown, but it was called back for holding (when Reid was already ten yards down field). On the next play, Rowe fumbled the ball and Virginia recovered.

Virginia was unable to do anything on their next drive, as Watford ran for no gain, and threw two wildly incomplete passes to force the punt. After a one-yard loss for Brandon Ross, Rowe found Deon Long on the right side, who broke off a 37-yard gain. After an incomplete pass to Culmer, Ross ran 36 yards down the right side to bring Maryland into the red zone. Four plays later, Rowe pitched it outside to Ross, who ran seven yards for the touchdown, making it 14-6 Terps.

On the Cavaliers' following drive, Khalek Shepherd broke off a 44-yard to bring the ball into the red zone. A few plays later, Watford made an incredible play down the left side, running around the Maryland defense before finding Jake McGee in the end zone for the score to make it a one-point game.

True freshman Jacquille Veii got some play on Maryland's next drive, running for 16 yards on the first play before catching a screen pass for six more. After a rush for no gain by Veii, Rowe found Nigel King for a first down to keep the drive alive. Rowe was sacked for a loss of 13 yards, and on third-and-long he went deep to Deon Long -- too deep, and the Terps punted the ball away.

On the first play of the following drive, Watford found Parks for a 35-yard screen pass, before targeting the McGee/Hendy mismatch for 14 more. After two stops by the Maryland defense, Watford completed another screen to Parks for the first down. After a two-yard rush from Shepherd, Watford threw two incomplete passes (including a nice play by Hendy to break one up), but Vozenilek hit the 27-yarder to make it 16-14.

Maryland's defense has come up strong in the red zone, and the offense came through at the end of the period to give the Terps a 7-6 lead over Virginia after one.

Virginia received the opening kickoff, and gave the ball to Kevin Parks early. The running back ran for five yards on his first carry and two on his second, and David Watford found Keeon Johnson over the middle for a first down. Parks ran for five yards on his next carry before Watford connected with Jake McGee for another first. Marcus Whitfield broke through for a big tackle of a loss of Khalek Shepherd, making it second-and-15. Watford found Kyle Dockins for a short gain, setting up third-and-long. The Cavaliers attempted a draw pitch, but Andre Monroe broke through into the backfield to force the punt. Will Likely fumbled the punt, giving the Cavaliers another possession.

The Terps stuffed two straight Virginia runs to make it third-and-nine from the eleven, and a Watford pass fell incomplete to the left side. Alec Vozenilek hit a 28-yard field goal, making it 3-0 Virginia.

After an incomplete pass from Caleb Rowe to start out the first drive, he found Stefon Diggs for a 12-yard gain. Kenneth Goins took the next play for a one-yard gain. Rowe was unable to find Ross on the next play, but connected with Amba Etta for a 13-yard gain. A play-action backwards pass to Diggs went out of bound for a one-yard loss, and a one-yard pass to Ross gained two yards to set up third-and-nine. Rowe threw the ball in the middle of nowhere on the next play, setting up a punt for Nate Renfro, which he booted 43 yards into the end zone for a touchback.

On Virginia's next drive, Marcus Whitfield tipped a Watford pass back into the quarterback's hands, who was tackled for a four-yard loss. On the next play, Watford ran up the middle for nine yards, and then found Jake McGee for a 16-yard gain and a first down. After two incomplete passes, Watford found McGee over the middle for a 39-yard gain (who beat A.J. Hendy quite easily over the middle), bringing the Cavaliers near the Terrapin red zone. Two plays later, Watford found Zachary Swanson for a 14-yard gain to the six-yard-line. After a five-yard gain by Parks, the Terrapin defense stuffed him for no gain two plays in a row, forcing an 18-yard field goal from Vozenilek.

After his nationally-recognized performance against West Virginia, Hendy has really struggled over the past two weeks. Maryland is hurting without Jeremiah Johnson, Dexter McDougle and Matt Robinson (especially Robinson, who would cover those middle routes that Virginia has been preying on), and Hendy has been exposed since his award-winning performance against the Mountaineers.

Maryland's offense came to life late in the first quarter, as Rowe found Ross on a screen pass for 77 yards to bring the Terps to the goal line. Two plays later, Ross jumped over the pile for the touchdown, giving Maryland the 7-6 lead.

Some quick stats:

Caleb Rowe - 4/8, 104 yards

Brandon Ross - Two rushes, two yards, one touchdown, two receptions, 79 yards

Anthony Nixon - Five tackles, one for a loss

Caleb Rowe will start for the Terrapins.

Maryland starting quarterback C.J. Brown will not play against in the team's game against Virginia Saturday after an injury suffered against Florida State last week.

Brown was listed as doubtful in the weekly injury report, but he has not yet been able to recover fully from the concussion. The junior was having a career year with 13 total touchdowns, and has averaged 10 yards per passing attempt and six yards per rush.

Instead, the Terrapins will turn to sophomore Caleb Rowe, who has averaged 6.8 yards per attempt this season. While Brown is a dual-threat, Rowe is clearly a pass-first quarterback, and the Terrapins' offense could see a boost in production from Stefon Diggs, who hasn't had his usual eye-popping numbers in the past few games.

Maryland missed a golden opportunity here to have a Red Out for the red-headed Rowe's start. He started one game last year as a true freshman, against Boston College -- a game the Terps lost 20-17 on the road.

The Terrapins' run attack will likely also look quite different, as well. While the zone read will probably still have its place, it will be toned down quite a bit from when Brown is quarterback. As a result, more standard runs will be used, which could see increased production from Brandon Ross and the Terrapin running back corps, who struggled mightily with the zone read in their first conference game last week.

Can Maryland end the ACC rivalry on a positive note?

Maryland will look to recover from a blowout loss as they face rival Virginia for what could be the last time.

The numbers

Rankings and records: Oh man both teams are SO unranked. The Terps are 4-1 (0-1 in ACC) while Virginia is 2-3 (also 0-1 in conference play). The Terps hold a 43-32-2 lead in the all-time series, but haven't defeated the Cavaliers in College Park since 2005. The road team has won this game the last four years.

Vegas: Maryland is a seven-point favorite, and the over/under is 44 points.

Weather: Low 60s with a chance of rain.

Maryland looks to recover from a tough blowout loss against a Virginia team that has struggled.

Maryland takes on Virginia this weekend, and while it is a rivalry game, I have a feeling the comments section won't be as...crowded as last week.

Recent history between these two teams has been odd, as the road team has won the last four contests (and Virginia hasn't lost at Byrd since 2005). This Cavaliers team, however, is frankly just not very good -- after an impressive opening win to BYU and getting blown out by Oregon (as one does), the Cavaliers blew out a very bad VMI team before being beaten soundly by Pitt and Ball State. The Cardinals are a good MAC team and Pitt is 3-1, but neither have anywhere near the talent that Virginia does, and for whatever reason Mike London's squad seems unable to put it all together.

Let's run the matchup down, unit by unit.

Maryland offensive line vs. Virginia defensive line:

The Terrapins' front unit was manhandled against Florida State, so let's take a look and see how the Cavaliers' line stacks up.

The two stars for Virginia up front are Eli Harold (6'4", 230) and Brent Urban (6'7", 295), while Jake Snyder (6'4", 270) and former Maryland target David Dean (6'1", 290) also start. While Harold (3.5 sacks) and Urban (seven tackles for a loss, eight passes broken up) will make plays in the backfield, this unit does not create nearly as many matchup problems as Florida State did last weekend, especially when it comes to size.

That being said, Harold and Urban (especially Urban) have been playing some fantastic football this year, and until Maryland's offensive line proves otherwise, it's hard to give them this category.

Advantage: Virginia.

Maryland defensive line vs. Virginia offensive line:

The Cavaliers have struggled on the offensive line this season, but have some big talents, led by left tackle Morgan Moses (6'6", 325 and a legitimate NFL prospect). Virginia's only other senior on the line is left guard Luke Bowanko (6'6", 300), and they start sophomores at center and right guard and a freshman at right tackle.

Darius Kilgo has continued to dominate on the inside, but Quinton Jefferson and Keith Bowers have been relatively quiet in recent weeks. The return of Zeke Riser should strengthen the unit, as should the move of Andre Monroe to the inside, where he found success against Florida State.

Advantage: Maryland.

Maryland rushing offense vs. Virginia front seven:

The Terps couldn't get anything going against Florida State, but especially struggled on the ground, averaging just 1.3 yards per carry. If C.J. Brown can't play, Maryland's ground game is further hampered -- Rowe isn't exactly a scramble threat and it would likely take the zone read almost entirely out of their gameplan.

That being said, the Terps do have two very talented rushers in Brandon Ross and Albert Reid, and a freshman who continues to impress in Jacquille Veii.

The Cavaliers start three linebackers -- freshman converted tight end Max Valles, junior Henry Coley and junior Daquan Romero. Valles is quick off the edge, and has two-and-a-half sacks this year, but the stars are Coley (36 tackles) and Romero (team-high 39 tackles) who provide consistency in the front seven and should provide a strong counter to Maryland's running game.

Advantage: Toss-up.

Maryland front seven vs. Virginia rushing offense:

The usually-strong linebacking unit didn't have a very good game against the Seminoles, breaking through the Florida State offensive line occasionally only to be tossed away by the Wee Baby Jameis and his incredible torso strength.

Running the ball is something the Cavaliers do quite well, and if they can focus their efforts on the ground offensively and remain successful enough that the play-action pass can score, they can put up some points on Saturday. Starter Kevin Parks is a pinball of a running back (5'8", 205) who is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and has been a consistent presence for Virginia for three years. Khalek Shepherd is more of a speedy option, and is averaging 7.5 yards per carry on just 19 attempts.

Advantage: Virginia.

Maryland receivers vs. Virginia secondary:

Both Stefon Diggs and Deon Long have had their struggles in recent games, but they should see more of the ball against a Virginia secondary missing their main star.

Demetrious Nicholson will not play due to an injury, and the Cavaliers will greatly miss the junior, who has broken up four passes this year and has three career interceptions. He was named to multiple preseason all-conference teams, and the former four-star prospect may be replaced a freshman -- either Tim Harris or Divante Walker.

On the other side at cornerback is Maurice Canady, who has 29 tackles and two passes broken up. At safety, the Cavaliers start Anthony Harris (two interceptions, one fumble forced, one punt blocked) and former Maryland target Brandon Phelps (14 tackles).

Advantage: Maryland.

Maryland secondary vs. Virginia receivers:

The Terrapins' McDougle- and Johnson-less secondary was certainly exposed by a hungry Jameis Winston and a deep Seminole receiving corps last week, but Will Likely and co. will likely have an easier time against a Cavalier group that has struggled.

How much have they struggled? The starters listed this week are Keon Johnson (three career receptions), Kyle Dockins (zero career receptions) and Miles Gooch (one career reception).

Now, the Cavaliers do have actual factual wide receivers that have caught actual factual passes -- Tim Smith (11 receptions, 142 yards) and former Maryland target Darius Jennings (14 catches, 107 yards) -- but this is a unit in trouble.

Advantage: Maryland.

Maryland quarterback vs. Virginia quarterback:

C.J. Brown may not play, and while Caleb Rowe has shown that he has a powerful arm, he isn't exactly proven on the field.

For the Virginia side of things, David Watford has been frankly terrible. After averaging 4.7 yards per attempt with three touchdowns against four interceptions in 2011, he's somehow gotten worse, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt with three touchdowns against seven interceptions. He's been hailed as a dual-threat, but is averaging 2.3 yards per rush (thanks in part to the poor play of UVA's offensive line).

Advantage: Toss-up.

Maryland special teams vs. Virginia special teams:

The Terps have been strong on special teams this year -- Nate Renfro has punted well, Brad Craddock has improved leaps and bounds and they have multiple threats in the return game. Virginia? Not so much. Alec Vozenilek has done a fine job punting, at 42.5 yards per kick and Vozenilek and Ian Frye have combined for five of six field goals made, but Virginia has done a poor job returning kicks.

Advantage: Maryland.

Overall impressions and final tally

Final: Maryland, 4-2-2.

Another note? Virginia is a really, really poorly-coached team, with key penalties hampering them at nearly every turn. Maryland ranks eighth in the nation in penalty yardage, with just 31.6 per game, while Virginia is all the way down at 83rd, averaging 55.6 per game.

Our prediction: Maryland 27, Virginia 13.
