The big cornerback will enroll at College Park this summer and will play this upcoming season.

Maryland has made a late addition to their 2014 recruiting class, as JuCo cornerback Denzel Conyers has commmited to the Terps, as first reported by Terrapin Times.

Conyers was a three-star prospect coming out of Boca Ciega (Fla.) High School as a member of the class of 2012, committing to FIU before reportedly being told he could not play there. He then ended up at Butte (Calif.) Community College, growing into a bigger corner (and now a Big Ten commit).

Conyers is listed at 6'3" and 200 pounds, and fits the mold of what Maryland is looking for at the cornerback position (as seen by the commitment of Daniel Ezeagwu). It was a position of concern for the Terps, and Conyers should help fill the gaps caused by the departures of Dexter McDougle and Isaac Goins (a former California JuCo prospect himself).

Will Likely has impressed in spring but is much better suited for an interior cornerback position, and Alvin Hill and Jarrett Ross are still raw (although Hill has played well in practices and scrimmages open to the public). Conyers helps provide cover, experience and size at the position, and it would not be surprising at all if he joins Jeremiah Johnson as the two outside corners in nickel sets (with Likely on the inside).

Here's Conyers's highlight tape, where he shows off his size, field awareness and playmaking ability. It's not often you can make a pickup like this so late in the recruiting process, but Conyers addresses Maryland's needs in a significant fashion and should play a role this season.

What it doesn't help, however, is Maryland's scholarship situation. By our count, they are now three over the allotted limit, so there will certainly be some roster movement before fall kicks off.

Carter hails from Waldorf, and attends Westlake High School, giving Maryland their fourth commitment in the state. Listed at 6'2" and 185 pounds, he played cornerback, free safety and quarterback in high school, and is expected to play safety in College Park.

He's not a name that has been heard often over the past year, and the commitment comes as a bit of a surprise as a result. He is considered a three-star prospect by the 247sports composite.

Carter also played power forward in high school, and is a very capable athlete. Here's his senior season highlights -- he has good size and ball awareness, and should provide much-needed depth to the secondary unit.

This move comes in tandem with Jordan Noil's decommitment, and it's hard to see that as a coincidence. Carter will join Josh Woods and Daniel Ezeagwu as commitments in the Maryland secondary, with Carter and Woods expected to play safety.

It's Maryland's second commitment of the day, as Ezeagwu joins linebacker Nnamdi Egbuaba. Both Ezeagwu and Egbuaba took official visits to College Park this past weekend.

When Maryland lost out on Jalen Tabor, the local five-star cornerback who instead committed to Arizona in a shocking announcement, some of the talk naturally turned to who could replace him in the class. Maryland was in definite need of at least one more cornerback, with Dexter McDougle and Isaac Goins both graduating, and we made some suggestions at the time.

Expect the Terps to make stronger pushes at JuCo option Vance Roberts and local players Elliott Davis, Daniel Ezeagwu, Jamal Robinson, Vashon Tucker and Anthony Fludd.

Well, it looks like they've found their answer in Ezeagwu, or at least one of them.

Out of Colonial Forge (Va.) High School, Ezeagwu hails from Stafford (McDougle and Torrey Smith both went to Stafford Senior, funnily enough) and is considered a three-star by the 247sports composite. He is also rated as the 85th-best cornerback in the class and the 31st-best player in the state of Virginia.

More telling, always, is the offers the recruit receieved: Ezeagwu's only other major scholarship offer came from Virginia (who recruits very well), with offers from James Madison, Towson and Old Dominion as well.

Ezeagwu has a twin brother, David, who plays linebacker, and the two had reportedly expressed interest in playing together. David could be added as a preferred walk-on, or he could end up at one of the local FCS schools (James Madison was the only school to offer both brothers).

Listed at 6'2" and 200 pounds, Ezeagwu has a listed 40 time of 4.40. If that's close to accurate, that's a pretty incredible combination of size and speed, which is always a plus. Here's some highlight video from his senior season:

I'm not sure if he has 4.4 speed, but he's certainly better than everyone else on the field, which is never a bad sign. He played receiver and returner as well as cornerback in high school, which speaks to his range of skills and athletic ability. If you want to see defensive highlights, fast forward to around 6:45.

Although technically a local recruit because of where he played his high school ball, Egbuaba actually spent the majority of his life living in Africa -- Nigeria to be exact.

A two-sport athlete, also playing basketball at St. Frances, Egbuaba came to the United States with the hopes of using his athletic ability to earn himself a D-I scholarship.

And the 6-feet-1, 215-pound prospect has done just that, claiming offers from Maryland, Oklahoma, UConn -- Edsall's old stomping grounds -- and Virginia. The Terps made their offer to Egbuaba official on January 17. In addition to the aforementioned schools, Egbuaba has also drawn interest from Arizona, Duke, Miami, N.C. State, Old Dominion, Rutgers, and West Virginia, where he attended camp this past summer.

He is considered a three-star prospect by the 247sports composite, where he is ranked the 96th-best outside linebacker in the class and the 35th-best player in the state of Maryland.

Brett Kulka, Tyler Burke and Jesse Aniebonam are the other Terrapin recruits in the 2014 class who could end up playing linebacker, although at least one will play on the defensive line.

Here's some highlight tape of Egbuaba.

Pete Volk, Testudo Times managing editor: Egbuaba is a nice pickup for the Terps this late in the game. He's unrated now, but I expect him to pick up three stars when the tape is re-evaluated -- he's a legitimate power conference outside linebacker with very good tackling ability. I imagine Egbuaba and one of the three names Pat mentioned above will be placed at linebacker (my guess would be Burke), with the other two sent down to the line. Maryland graduates four different outside linebackers this year, so while I expect Egbuaba to redshirt this season, he could make an impact as soon as next year.

Breaking down the footage of Maryland's newest 2014 commitment.

There's two basic conventions when it comes to long-snapping.

The more traditional school is based on what's called the BRVTC curve. The acronym stands for Balance, Release, Velocity, Trajectory & Consistency - the five classic tenets of the craft. However, there's been a revolution in recent years in which the snap itself has been de-emphasized slightly to make way for the growth of new positional elements such as post-snap scheming, footwork, snap-angle ....

Just kidding -- I totally made all that stuff up. I don't know a damn thing about long-snapping and I'm not about to go all UMDTerps11 and unleash a 3,500 word sabermetrical encyclopedia about it. It's a long-snap, which is sort of like the snap the quarterback takes - only longer. That's about as scientific as we're getting in this space.

But that doesn't mean we can't take a closer look at newest Terp commit Nate Adams on film and try to draw some conclusions about the young man. Let's get to it.

School: Phoenix (Ariz.) Greenway

Position: Long-snapper. Also played center and linebacker in high school - and quite effectively, it seems.

Measurables: 6-foot-2, 213 pounds, 305-lb bench, 515-lb squat

Senior season: Adams' Greenway Demons finished 6-4 but missed the playoffs. His punter averaged 37.4 yards on 29 punts, a solid high school average, while his kickers were a combined 36-for-40 on PATs. Based on those numbers, I think you could safely say that the team had an effective kicking game with Adams providing the snaps. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that as a linebacker, Adams set a school record with 101 tackles and was on the all-state list for two years. So though he seems to project to be a long-snapping specialist at Maryland, the Terps are definitely getting an athlete and a football player, too. Can't hurt. Finally, as Pete previously reported, Adams will be playing in the Semper Fi All-American Bowl in January.

Offers: Adams had listed offers from Maryland and Air Force with interest from Arizona State, Auburn, Stanford and Washington State.

On film: I don't really know what to say about his snaps on film other than every one makes it to the punter or holder cleanly. Of course, if I were compiling film for a long-snapper, I'd probably go ahead and leave out any snaps that sailed out of the end zone or ground balls that five-holed the punter. Let's just assume that he can snap or he wouldn't be an All-American and a Division 1 prospect.

Here's the good thing about his film: play after play, he snaps, then takes off downfield and makes plays on punt coverage. He disrupts things, he makes tackles, he forces fumbles. I'm no student of punt coverage, but I don't believe I've ever seen a long-snapper who doubled as his team's gunner. Adams definitely has many plays on this film where he beats his teammates to the ball. I wasn't any more excited to watch long-snapping film than any of you probably are, but give it a look and you like the kid and his motor. As I said above, he's an athlete and a football player. Programs need kids like that, regardless of what position they play.

2014 Outlook: The opinion here is that you only give a full ride to a long-snapper if you believe you are going to have hassle-free snaps for four straight years. Adams projects to be the only scholarship long-snapper next season, so expect him to take over the role immediately, provided he proves himself trustworthy in camp. I suppose a redshirt isn't out of the realm of possibility, but my guess is that would only happen if he struggles adjusting to being on a college line. If Adams becomes a good long-snapper at Maryland, it means we'll probably never hear his name again except for maybe in position-by-position season previews. And if he's bad, yeah, we'll get to know him a little.

Longterm Outlook: It's the same as the 2014 outlook, so I'll use this section to try and raise what I think is the most interesting question about this commitment: should Maryland be handing out scholarships to long-snappers? I'm going to vote yes, although I can respect the argument against it. There were certainly times last season where it might have been nice to have another scholarship cornerback, or, oh, let me think, how bout another QB in the 2012 season? Most years a positional need will arise due to injury at some point, but of course you don't know when or what position that will be so you can't hand out scholarships for it. If this particular scholarship buys us four years of clean snaps that hopefully become booming punts, reliable kicks and just all-around strong special teams play, it's money well spent. May your snaps be true, Nate Adams. Welcome to Terp Nation!

Adams is one of the top-ten long snappers in the country.

Maryland has added another piece to their 2014 class, as long-snapper Nate Adams has committed to the Terrapins. It is unusual for long-snappers to get scholarship offers, but it is an important position that Maryland has had good fortune with over the past half-decade with Tim Downs and Greg Parcher.

Listed at 6'2" and 213 pounds, Adams attends Greenway High School in Phoenix, Arizona. The 247sports composite rates him as a two-star prospect, ranking him as the seventh-best long-snapper in the class and the 64th-best prospect in the state.

The Terrapins were not Adams' first offer -- he also holds one from Air Force, so you can safely denote that he's very strong academically. Maryland has Christian Carpenter, Will Rosenblum and Joe Marchese as long-snappers already on the roster, but health was a concern (as was consistent play), and you can expect Adams to have the inside track for the job next season.

The nice thing about locking up a long snapper is it's a position where you can just have one guy for four years (with a walk-on backup in case of injury). There's no fear of early exit to the NFL, and you absolutely need a good one for your special teams unit to perform adequately.

Adams will be playing in the Semper Fi All-American Bowl this January, along with some of the top prospects in the country. Here are some highlights:

He is no stranger to pass blocking, as his QBs routinely threw the ball 20-30 times or more per game and rolled up impressive yardage totals. Team injuries also thrust Christie into a starting role on defense, where he played mostly nose but logged time at multiple positions. After the season, he was the voted co-winner of the Zellner Award by the football coaches of Suffolk County, an honor given annually to the county's top OL.

Offers: Maryland was his first Div. 1 offer and second overall offer after Albany. He had reportedly received interest from Temple, BC, Syracuse, Rutgers, UConn as well as FCS schools such as Maine, Rhode Island and Fordham.

On film: Let me first say that film can be a very deceiving medium for evaluation. I would argue that you learn a lot more about a kid from those plays that didn't make film than the ones that did. How quickly does he get up after being knocked down? Does he take plays off or quit on them after getting beat? What's his body language like? A compilation of somebody's 25 best plays of the season tells you none of these important things -- you've got to stand on the sidelines to see that stuff -- but you can still draw conclusions from the highlight reel.

With Christie, the things that stood out most were his raw size as well as his movement and athleticism. He is a big kid but it looks like very good weight and he can really move around. In news stories, the first thing his coach says about him is that he's a good athlete, which is nice to hear. He also appears to have good knowledge of the playbook and you can see, during these run plays, Christie executing exactly what was designed. He can really move his feet, but his footwork is definitely a little choppy while his upper body goes upright at times -- a bad combination that could lead to him getting bulldozed early in college practice.

2014 Maryland football commitments

In fact, with his technique in general, I think you can see why schools were slow to offer him despite his big frame and his mobility. If you watch film of Damian Prince or Derwin Gray, you'll see nastiness that you don't see in Christie's film. He's physically dominant in some of those blocks but doesn't engage them long enough and doesn't always go for the kill when it's there. D-1 recruiters want to see nasty linemen with a highlight reel full of pancake blocks against overmatched high school opponents. I think this mixtape only had 3 or 4 pancakes and you'd hope for more out of somebody that big and mobile who is playing in a relatively weak region for high school football.

2014 Outlook: Looks like a certain redshirt to me, but that's not a bad thing. Let's see the kid put on 35+ pounds in 2014 while honing his skills and learning the scheme. We've got other first-year guys coming in like Gray, Cohen, Mazyck and Prince (hope, hope) who should be plenty game-ready if we need true freshman contributors (and I'm sorry to say it sure looks like we will).

Longterm Outlook: My theory on offensive line recruiting is that it's the position on the field with the widest gap between high school and college. There are gifted big boys like Cyrus Kouandjio, Derwin Gray and Damian Prince whose film screams "game-ready" but those are few and far between. In most cases, colleges are simply recruiting a big body knowing full well they'll be building a D-1 lineman from scratch. Christie has that body and appears on film to be an advanced athlete for his size. There are some negatives, too, aside from some of the questions that arise from film.

The timing of this commit is suspicious, coming so soon after Maryland missed on Ruble and Applefield. That says to me that he had a conditional offer and wasn't one of the guys Maryland initially felt like it had to have. Also, looking at his offer list, I'm seeing interest but no offers from Fordham, Maine, Rhode Island, UConn, etc. The fact that none of those schools offered him is bothersome -- there's no nice way to say that but it's there.

I'm generally not wild about Maryland being the first big school to jump at an under-the-radar prospect, but that doesn't mean he won't be a good player. I remember hating the Alex Twine verbal because he chose us over Towson and Maine or something -- I think you could probably find a post or two back then where I panned it. Fast forward a couple years and now I love Twine and he definitely belongs. So if the take-away is that I have no idea what I'm talking about, it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

Longterm, this recruit appears to have the size and athleticism to be a meaningful Maryland lineman provided he buys in and makes the most of the resources available to him. Welcome to Maryland, Sean Christie!

The Terrapins add another piece to their 2014 class.

After losing out on two 2014 offensive tackle prospects this week, it was an easy guess that Maryland would be looking at some new players at the position. Maryland seems to be in good position with five-star tackle Damian Prince, but the Terps wanted to add a lot of linemen in this class and were hoping to grab one of the two they missed out on.

That new piece has emerged, quickly, as New York offensive tackle Sean Christie has committed to Maryland one day after receiving an offer, via 247sports.

Listed at 6'5" and 280 pounds, Christie has good height but will need to build on that size before the move to the Big Ten. He is considered a three-star by the 247sports composite, and is ranked as the 134th-best offensive tackle in the class and the 14th-best player from New York. He has just one other listed offer -- Albany, the new destination of former Maryland defensive line coach Greg Gattuso.

Christie also had interest from Boston College, Connecticut, Rutgers and Syracuse, among other. It's not quite the grab that Marcus Applefield or Brock Ruble would have been, but it adds depth to the class and allows the Terrapins to redshirt a lineman and groom him for the future -- Jared Cohen, Larry Mazyck, Derwin Gray and Prince are all expected to compete for starting jobs from day one, while Brendan Moore is expected to redshirt.
