The undrafted Terps guard picks up a partially guaranteed contract in time for training camp.

Editor’s note: This story was originally published on Aug. 1, when Trimble’s signing was reported. It has been updated after Minnesota’s announcement.

After spending the NBA Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers, former Maryland point guard Melo Trimble will continue his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Trimble’s deal, first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski last month, is partially guaranteed, so he figures to get a training camp tryout with the Wolves. His training camp signing was announced by Minnesota on Monday, along with forward Amile Jefferson.

Trimble had a hard time getting off the bench for the Sixers summer squad, but in his three games in Vegas he averaged 10.3 points on 60 percent shooting. Trimble was initially signed by Philadelphia right after going undrafted, but the team brought in a cavalcade of young guards to compete and he ultimately didn’t make the cut.

Now he’ll join a Timberwolves backcourt that added point guard Jeff Teague in free agency and Jimmy Butler in a draft-night trade. The only other point guard, besides Teague, currently on the roster is former Duke standout Tyus Jones.

Trimble’s not a lock to make the roster, as the Wolves will likely bring in other guards to compete, but the partial guarantee is a solid sign. Now, it’s up to him to prove he can contribute.

The draft process is over. The NBA process has begun.

Melo Trimble spent three seasons in a Maryland Terrapins uniform, and now he’s got a new one to put on.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Haynes hours after the draft.

Ever since declaring for the draft in March, Trimble has faced questions about his game, which was picked apart thoroughly as his college career progressed. While he’ll never be the most athletic player on an NBA floor, there are plenty of ways he can help a team at the highest level.

However, after being a star in college, Trimble now faces an uphill battle to even get his foot in the NBA door. He’ll have to impress the Brett Brown in the summer to secure a contract, and even then, it’s possible he starts in the NBA G-League. If that doesn’t work out, he might head overseas for a better opportunity.

This journey is far from over, but after spending three years at Maryland and three months preparing for the draft, Trimble finally knows his next stop. Now he has to make the most of the chance.

Assessing the former Maryland star’s stock on draft day.

The NBA Draft is finally upon us, and Maryland’s best hope of being represented Thursday night comes in the form of Melo Trimble.

The point guard was a three-year star for the Terps, leading the team in its transition to the Big Ten. After testing the new draft process last year, he declared for the draft again after this season and signed with an agent, forgoing his senior year.

Trimble averaged 15.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists in his time as a Terp, shooting just under 43 percent from the field and just over 34 percent from deep. He’s faced questions about his three-point shooting accuracy since his averages dipped from 42 percent as a freshman to around 32 percent over his last two seasons.

His draft stock peaked after an outstanding freshman season, but in terms of his development, Trimble felt this year was his best shot at going pro. He isn’t currently projected to hear his name called Thursday night, but brings a number of skills to the table that should get him an opportunity to earn his place in the league.

Strengths

Trimble has a number of intangibles that should carry over to the next level. He has the frame of an NBA point guard, measuring at almost 6’3 and 195 pounds at the combine. Trimble has been Maryland’s scoring leader the last two seasons, but perhaps the most important skills he brings to a team are his court vision and passing.

Trimble excelled at always keeping an eye on the open man. This was on full display in his matchup against North Carolina his sophomore season. He had a career-high 12 assists — alongside a career-worst eight turnovers — and he created for both himself and the team out of the pick-and-roll and was able to find shooters in space, necessary skills in today’s NBA.

Having Anthony Cowan this season allowed Trimble to develop as an off-ball scorer and facilitator. He was still responsible for ending the same amount of possessions, per KenPom, but he was able to work off of screens with greater frequency. In addition, Trimble’s played with a “stretch-four” in each of his seasons at Maryland. After Portland Trail Blazers forward Jake Layman filled the role Trimble’s freshman year, Robert Carter took the job his sophomore season and Justin Jackson masqueraded as a power forward last year. As the NBA is trends more towards the “pace and space” style of play, it’s valuable that Trimble understands how to operate that type of offense.

At the end of the day, Trimble knows how to score, and that can’t be taught. Of course, everything he got away with at the college level won’t work in the pros, but he’ll just have to adjust his game accordingly. Though his shooting percentages dropped as his time at Maryland went on, Trimble’s a more-than-capable shooter, and while comfortable shooting off-the-dribble, he’s at his best when he can get a head of steam going towards the basket. He put up a career-high 32 points against Northwestern in February, showcasing his ability to put points on the board.

Weaknesses

Trimble has a number of question marks keeping teams away from drafting him. Some, like his turnover issues and defense, might mitigate themselves with experience and effort. Others, like questions about his athleticism and shooting consistency, he’ll simply have to deal with.

Size aside, he’ll never be the most athletic player on the court. In college, he countered with his ability to draw fouls. Trimble’s most efficient shooting year came his freshman year. After that, defenses started to focus their gameplan against him. At least a portion of his decline in shooting can be attributed to the increase in contested shots he was taking. He’ll need to pick his shots better and play within the flow of the offense to prove he belongs in the league.

“If I just get the opportunity, I feel as though I can prove myself,” Trimble said on Glenn Clark Radio in May. “I’m a pretty big guard, a lot of people see me in person and say, ‘I didn’t know you were that tall.’ As far as my jump shot, I know I can shoot, every shot’s not going to go in for me, and unfortunately a lot of shots didn’t go in for me.”

What’s the best-case scenario?

Trimble hasn’t shown up on mock drafts since he declared and ranks as the No. 84 prospect on DraftExpress’ Big Board. He could still sneak into the second round, but it’s looking improbable.

Trimble’s best shot at making an NBA roster will be to impress a team during summer league and earn his spot during training camp. He worked out for a good number of teams during the pre-draft process, and he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers shortly after going undrafted.

The new Collective Bargaining Agreement facilitated the creation of two-way contracts. Next season, 26 NBA teams will have direct NBA G-League (formerly D-League) affiliates, essentially meaning there are 52 more roster spots to go around. This feels like the best situation for Trimble’s professional development.

As owners of the Delaware 87ers, if the Sixers like what Trimble displays over the summer and early fall, they could decide to use one of these two-way contracts on him. That would allow Trimble to primarily refine his skills in the NBA’s minor leagues, but still give him the opportunity to get time at basketball’s top level.

Trimble doesn’t look like a star at next level, but has the skills to stick.

Trimble’s name didn’t get called Thursday night, but he’ll get an opportunity this summer. Trimble led Maryland to three straight NCAA Tournaments, including its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2003, and though he probably won’t be the focal point of an offense again, that didn’t go unnoticed. Scouts raved about Trimble at the college level, but his NBA career will likely be followed with much less fanfare.

Trimble has expressed he has no qualms starting in the G-League or overseas, and though making the NBA is obviously his top goal, he could also follow the route of former Terps Dez Wells and Rasheed Sulaimon. Both enjoyed solid seasons in the G-League last year and were back in front of NBA Scouts ahead of the combine. Trimble will have to make of his opportunities if he wants to find a role at the next level, and though he’ll probably go undrafted, he shouldn’t lack chances to prove himself.

Trimble has his eyes locked on the NBA, no matter the route it takes.

Melo Trimble declared for the NBA Draft shortly after Maryland’s season, but he always knew he wouldn’t get to have his senior night.

Tuesday on Glenn Clark Radio, Trimble revealed his mind was made up before the season started, letting him focus on enjoying his last season in College Park and maximizing his draft stock.

“I wanted to leave last year, so I put my name in for the draft, but things didn’t work out the way I wanted to,” Trimble said. “I knew that this year was going to be the best chance to put my name in the draft because I was healthy. Even things didn’t always go my way (this season), I still thought it was the best idea for me.”

Trimble’s not in the most recent mock draft on DraftExpress, but he got invited to the Draft Combine for the second straight year. He’s still answering questions about his size and the consistency of his jump shot, and that could lead to him going the D-League route. However, with the creation of two-way contracts, there are at least 60 more jobs available, so being the No. 90 prospect takes on a different meaning than in years past.

“A lot of people are saying I’m going straight to the D-League or overseas, but I look at it as a good thing for me to get better,” Trimble said. “Obviously [it would mean] I’m not ready, and I had an opportunity to get ready to hopefully have a chance to be in the NBA.”

Trimble said his decision to go pro never affected how he behaved as a teammate. He said he enjoyed getting to lead Maryland, after watching the baton get passed from Dez Wells to Jake Layman before him.

“For me to be able to lead the young guys and fight through adversity and just play basketball and not worry about what people are saying about you in the media and stuff like that ... that was a big thing for me,” Trimble said. “It was just special to see how they were able to grow throughout the year.”

Trimble will be joined at the combine by fellow Terp Justin Jackson, who quietly entered the draft after his freshman season. Jackson didn’t sign an agent, and though Trimble admits he hasn’t talked to Jackson much, he understands his situation. Trimble declared for the draft last year, the first that the NBA allowed underclassmen to enter the draft without representation and maintain their college eligibility.

“It’s a tough decision,” Trimble said. “Everyone wants to make it to the next level, of course, but when you still have that option to come back it’s a great feeling. Whether you go through workouts and have a bad one, you know that you can still come back. He’s going to do well, he just has to prepare himself that if he wants to stay, that’s what he wants to do.”

Trimble and Jackson will be at the combine from May 9-14, and are also in the process of scheduling private interviews. Jackson isn’t projected to get drafted this year either, but is in early 2018 mock drafts. He’ll have until May 24 to decide to whether or not to return to school, but it’s pros or bust for Trimble.

It’s time for Trimble to shine, and earn his way into the mock draft boards.

Former Maryland basketball guard Melo Trimble has received an invite to the NBA Draft Combine, per ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

The combine will be held from May 9-14 in Chicago, with the on-court workouts right in the middle on May 11 and 12.

It will be the second time Trimble has participated in the NBA Combine. His disappointing showing last year was a factor in his decision to return to Maryland; hopefully for him, this time yields better results. He’s not a guy who will jump off the page with measurables, but can surely impress during the on-court sessions.

Last year Trimble had the option of removing himself from the draft, an option he exercised at the last minute. This year, because he’s hired an agent, he does not have that option.

Draft Express projects Trimble will go undrafted, as he’s their No. 90 prospect. Now is the time for him to change their minds.

The NBA Draft will take place June 22 on ESPN.

Thomas and new editor Jared Goldstein, who is making his podcast debut, joined me to talk about these topics and more:

Melo is gone for good this time. Are we surprised that he hired an agent and that the process ended so soon?

What is Melo Trimble’s legacy at Maryland?

How do the Terps and Mark Turgeon work around Micah Thomas’ transfer, and what does that mean for players coming into the program this year?

What happened for the women against Oregon, and what’s the future like for Brenda Frese’s team?

Quarvez Boulware transfers out of Maryland as well. What does this mean for depth on the offensive line?

We also talked about whether Caleb Henderson is a real person, and also Jared attempted to explain his weird bracket on the air, but got nowhere. Enjoy the show!

Declaring for the draft was just the first step.

Melo Trimble ended his time with Maryland basketball on Wednesday by declaring for the NBA Draft and hiring an agent.

This is the first step on his journey to playing professionally, but it certainly isn’t the last. He’s the only Maryland player with a shot of getting drafted, so there’s going to be a whole lot of news coming out about Trimble in the coming months. Here’s a timeline of how things will go down so you can keep everything straight, which I’ve updated now that we know Trimble isn’t coming back.

<s>April 23, 2017 (11:59 p.m.) — NBA early-entry candidate application deadline.</s>

<s>This is the date by which Trimble has to declare for the draft. It’s unlikely he waits until the buzzer to do this one. In fact, Trimble could announce literally any second. This step is a formality. If he doesn’t declare, which is extremely unlikely, the rest of this is moot. But assuming he does declare, he’ll move on to step two. </s>

April 25, 2017 — NBA teams can begin conducting or attending workouts with early-entry players.

Trimble will get to see many teams when he goes to the combine, but this is when he’ll get to start. This is a minor step in the journey, but it’s a step nonetheless.

April 28, 2017 — Draft combine invitations (and player questionnaires) sent to invitees.

Trimble got an invite last year. So did Jake Layman, Diamond Stone and Robert Carter Jr. I can’t see why he wouldn’t get another invite this time around.

May 9-14, 2017 — NBA draft combine (Chicago).

This is the big event. The combine is where we’ll find out whether or not he can impress the scouts he failed to last year. Last year, Trimble received an overwhelming response from those scouts that he should return to school. These scouts already know his measurables, which have always been underwhelming, so he’ll have to play better in the scrimmage portion and do what he can to convince teams to take a flier on him.

<s>May 24, 2017 — NCAA (post-combine) withdrawal deadline.</s>

<s>This will be when we finally find out whether or not he’ll be returning to Maryland. Last year, Trimble waited until late at night on the final date to announce his decision. If he gets positive reviews this year, we might not have to wait as long. If scouts still aren’t sweet on him, he could end up going right down to the wire again.</s>

June 22, 2017 — NBA draft (New York).

This is the final step. He’ll hope to hear his name called, and will find out where he’ll start his professional career. Even if he goes undrafted, we’ll probably find out his destination shortly after. Trimble is talented enough to get a training camp invite somewhere at the absolute very least. Then his professional journey really gets started.
