No. 2 seed Women's Basketball
The Terps took care of business in their first round game against Iona. They crashed the boards and took advantage of their size down low. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored a team-high 19 points while Brionna Jones posted a double-double. Maryland will host Washington in the second round with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.
Record this week: 1-0 (74-58 win over Iona in first round of NCAA Tournament)
Record this season: (31-3, 16-2)
Grade for the week: A+. Maryland had a good balance on offense and won its first game in the NCAA Tournament by a nice margin.
Title Chances: The Terps have made the Final Four in each of the last two seasons, and I like their chances to make it three in a row.
No. 1 Women's Lacrosse
Maryland is absolutely rolling right now. The top-ranked Terps beat No. 3 Syracuse on the road two weeks ago and demolished No. 2 Florida last week. Maryland won by double digits on the road against a team with five wins against ranked teams, including two in the top five. The rest of the country has been effectively been put on notice; Maryland is the top team in the country.
Record this week: 1-0 (14-4 win over No. 2 Florida)
Record this season: (6-0)
Grade for the week: A+. Maryland just delivered a dominant statement to the rest of the country by crushing the second-ranked Gators on the road.
Title Chances: 5. Maryland is the favorite to win the Big Ten title.
No. 6 Men's Lacrosse
Maryland picked up its first win over a ranked opponent on Wednesday night at Maryland Stadium when the Terps beat No. 10 Albany. Austin Henningsen won 16 of 20 faceoffs to help Maryland maintain control of both the possession and tempo of the game. The offense and the defense played very well throughout the game. The Terps will get a nice break before hosting UNC.
Record this week: 1-0 (10-7 win over No. 10 Albany)
Record this season: (4-2)
Grade for the week: A+. Maryland shut down one of the best offenses in the nation and played a great game on both sides of the ball.
Title Chances: 5. Maryland was picked to finish second in the conference this season, but the Terps have a great chance to win the Big Ten.
Baseball
After a disappointing loss to UC Irvine, Maryland baseball dropped their first game against No. 23 Cal State Fullerton in extra innings, but won its next two to take the series. Brian Shaffer pitched a complete game shutout in the rubber match to help the Terps win the series. This was a nice series win for Maryland.
Record this week: 2-2 (9-5 loss to UC Irvine, 3-2 (10) loss, 8-4 win and a 1-0 win over No. 23 Cal State Fullerton)
Record this season: (9-10)
Grade for the week: B+. The Terps fought back to get a nice series win on the road against a ranked team. The loss to Irvine hurts the overall grade.
Title Chances: 2. I don't like Maryland's chances to win the Big Ten because they have yet to show consistency this season.
Wrestling
Maryland finished in 64th place out of 72 teams at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden. Geoffrey Alexander was the only Maryland wrestler to qualify, and he finished 1-2. This is now the second straight season that Maryland wrestling has finished its season without an All-American.
Gymnastics
The GymTerps finished in last place at the Big Ten Championships with a 194.025 and likely cost themselves a chance to go to the NCAA Championships. Head coach Brett Nelligan told me before the conference championship that Maryland probably needed a score close to or just under 196.000 to qualify. The Terps were on the outside looking in heading to the Big Ten Championships and it's highly unlikely that they will qualify for the NCAA Championships after their poor performance at Big Tens.
Record this week: The Terps finished 10th out of 10 teams at the Big Ten Championships with a score of 194.025
Record this season: (7-13)
Grade for the week: F. Maryland gymnastics needed a very good score to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The GymTerps didn't come close to getting it this weekend, posting one of their worst scores of the season.
Title Chances: Zero.
Softball
Maryland softball's struggles continue as the Terps lost all three of their home games this weekend. The Terps couldn't hold a 4-0 lead against UMass and got crushed by North Dakota State and Binghamton. This young team is having a lot of trouble playing consistently.
Record this week: 0-3 (5-4 loss to UMass, 10-1(6) loss to North Dakota State and a 9-3 loss to Binghamton)
Record this season: (7-20)
Grade for the week: F. Maryland played their first three home games of the season and lost all three.
Title Chances: Zero.
Track and Field
Peyton Wade tied for first in the high jump, Lisa Meneau led a sweep of the 400 meter hurdles and Brandon Thompson won the 100 and 200 meter dash at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge. The Terps also won the men's 4x400 meter relay.
Women's Tennis
The Terps are starting to find their groove a little bit, having won their last two in a row and four of their last five. The doubles point and Arnelle Sullivan's dominant win at No. 2 singles helped the Terps get the win against Iowa.
Record this week: 1-0 (4-3 win over Iowa)
Record this season: (6-7, 3-1)
Grade for the week: A. Maryland gutted out a solid Big Ten win and the Terps are playing with a lot of confidence.
Title Chances: Zero.
