Terrapin Title Tracker: Maryland women's lacrosse starts season with win over William & Mary

New, 3 comments

This is your weekly roundup of Maryland non-revenue action. Let's take a look at their chances to win some hardware.

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Women's Basketball

The Terrapins lost their biggest game to date at No. 7 Ohio State. They committed a mind-numbing 23 turnovers against the Buckeyes. This team simply didn't give themselves a chance to win. The Terps have a serious turnover problem. They coughed up the ball 20 times against Purdue and 24 times against Northwestern. If Maryland is going to make its third straight Final Four, this team will have to find a way to take care of the ball.

Record this week: 2-1 (94-86 loss at No. 7 Ohio State, a 73-59 win over Purdue and a 79-70 win at Northwestern)

Record this season: (23-3, 12-2)

Grade for the week: C-. Maryland its their big test of the week. The Terps needed to win that game against Ohio State and didn't.

Title Chances: 1. Maryland has almost no chance of repeating as Big Ten champions.

Women's Lacrosse

Maryland had its way with William & Mary, jumping out to a 12-4 lead at halftime before coasting to a 19-7 win. Taylor Cummings caused a career-high five turnovers and scored four goals while adding two assists and four ground balls. The Terps have a lot of potential, but they also have a great deal of room for improvement.

Record this week: 1-0 (19-7 win over William & Mary)

Record this season: (1-0)

Grade for the week: A+. The Terrapins took care of business in their season opener.

Title Chances: Maryland is the favorite to win the Big Ten title.

Wrestling

In a season where they captured their first-ever conference dual win, Maryland wrestling had a chance to cap off their Big Ten slate with a win against a solid, but not great, Wisconsin team. Unfortunately for Maryland, the weakness of their team proved too great to overcome. After splitting the dual's first two matches, the Badgers defeated Maryland at 165, 174, 184, 197, heavyweight and 125 pounds. A 3-3 tie became a 25-3 deficit.

The Terrapins got some of the bitter taste out of their mouths by thrashing a much weaker George Mason team.

Record this week: 1-1 (25-12 loss to Wisconsin and a 31-9 win over George Mason)

Record this season: (5-12, 1-8)

Grade for the week: C-. Maryland had a chance to make a statement in their Big Ten finale. They didn't.

Title Chances: 0. Maryland isn't going to win the Big Ten.

Gymnastics

The GymTerps weren't sharp at the Michigan Tri-Meet early in the week and after leading through two rotations, they coughed up the lead and lost to Rutgers.

Record this week: 0-3 (197.425-194.075 loss to No. 3 Michigan, 195.875-194.075 loss to Eastern Michigan, and a loss to Rutgers, 194.850-194.425)

Record this season: (2-6)

Grade for the week: F. After taking some steps forward this season, the Terps have taken a couple steps back.

Title Chances: 0. Maryland is not going to win the Big Ten.

Softball

Maryland softball played five games in three days at the Kajikawa Classic. Julie Wright's rebuild will not be immediate, but the Terps put up runs in bunches in their first action of the season. This team will be interesting to watch as the season progresses.

Record this week: 2-3 (9-1 loss to Boston College, 9-4 win over Boise State, 7-2 loss to No. 6 Oregon, 13-9 win over San Diego and a 5-0 loss to Utah State)

Record this season: (2-3)

Grade for the week: C. The Terps had some disappointing moments in their first five games of the year, but they also had some bright spots.

Title Chances: 0. Maryland will not win the Big Ten.

Track and Field

The Maryland Track and Field team had a number of standout performances at the Spire Invitational. Micha Powell broke her own school record in the 400 meter dash after setting it the week before, and Dan Trettel set a school record in the 800 meters.

Alexandra Lucki ran the second-fastest 1000 meters in school history and ran the fifth-fastest 800 meter in school history as well. Chioma Onyekwere won the shot put, and Peyton Wade took second in the pentathlon.

Women's Tennis

Maryland lost badly to LSU on Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge. The Tigers took the match by a score of 6-1. LSU is a decent team. Not a good team. A decent team. The kind of team that loses to South Alabama in tennis. This was an embarrassing loss for the Terrapins.

Record this week: 0-1 (6-1 loss to LSU)

Record this season: (1-3)

Grade for the week: F. Maryland got blown out by a mediocre team.

Title Chances: 0. Maryland is not going to win the Big Ten.
