Maryland women's basketball Profiles in Terpage: Kiara Leslie

The sophomore guard from North Carolina is primed to take the next step.

Height: 6'0"

High School: Holly Springs

Hometown: Holly Springs, N.C.

How'd She Get to College Park?

Despite missing her senior year due to an injury, Leslie was ranked the 52nd best player and number 8 guard by ESPN's HoopGurlz. She clearly wanted to forge her own path by not following in the footsteps of her brother C.J., who stayed closer to home playing for N.C.State. When she signed to play for the Terps, she said, "Where else could I spend the next four years and get a better educational and athletic experience than I will at the University of Maryland?"

Career Highlight

Scored her first career double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds against Wagner in just her second college game.

Dream Season

Leslie is an exceptionally versatile wing who has, according to coach Brenda Frese, made the biggest jump from her freshman to sophomore season. Though she's been slowed a bit by a preseason injury, Leslie could easily slide into the slot occupied by Laurin Mincy and see a dramatic increase in her minutes while doubling her freshman scoring and rebounding averages.

2015-16 Prospectus

Leslie is the sort of swing player that fits well into the schemes that Coach Frese likes to run. She can play three positions from off-guard to power forward. While she can pick up some of Mincy's minutes, she isn't likely to provide the same three point punch. Her mid-range game and her ability to rebound will almost assure her plenty of court time.
