The Maryland football team will face Charlotte in a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023, FBS Schedules reported on Tuesday. The series is Maryland's first known scheduling for either season.
According to the report, Maryland will visit Charlotte on Sept. 10, 2022, while the 49ers will trek to College Park on Sept. 9, 2023. Both games figure to take place in the second week of the college football season.
Charlotte is a pretty huge cupcake for a Big Ten program to schedule. The 49ers went 2-10 in 2015 and finished 124th out of 128 FBS teams in S&P+. They lost 58-10 in their only Power 5 game of the season, at Kentucky in November. It was their first year at the FBS level, playing in Conference USA.
By 2022, Charlotte will probably be better than it is now, but these still ought to line up as shoo-in victories. By this time, Big Ten teams won't be allowed to play FCS opponents and will need to have at least once power conference foe on their nonconference schedules every single year.
