Maryland football head coach DJ Durkin announced the hiring of Matt Barnes as linebackers coach, per a release. Barnes previously served as a defensive analyst under Durkin and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Barnes worked as a defensive and special teams graduate assistant at the University of Florida under Durkin from 2012-14, but most recently served as a defensive analyst under the new Maryland coach this past season at the University of Michigan. The Wolverines ranked No. 1 in the nation in defensive efficiency, No. 3 in passing yards allowed and No. 4 in total defense.
Barnes has roots in Maryland, where he was a team captain and linebacker at Salisbury University. He graduated in 2008 and started building his coaching resume soon thereafter as a running backs coach at Delaware Valley College in 2009. In 2010 he held the same title at West Virginia Wesleyan, before moving his way up to offensive coordinator and quarterback coach in 2011.
In the release Durkin also confirmed the hiring of Syracuse assistant Chris Beatty as wide receivers coach and Arkansas State running back coach Anthony Tucker under the same position. The release also noted that offensive coordinator Walt Bell will coach quarterbacks and assistant Head Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Pete Lembo will coach the team's tight ends.
