Maryland junior cornerback Will Likely has been named a second-team All-American kick and punt returner by USA Today, the newspaper announced on Tuesday.
Likely's 1,197 combined kick return yards are the most in the country this year. He led the Big Ten with a 17.7-yard punt return average, set the Big Ten's single-game punt return yardage record in Maryland's opener against Richmond and also set a Kinnick Stadium record with 220 kickoff return yards at Iowa. He averaged 22.5 yards on kickoff returns.
Kansas State's Morgan Burns was named ahead of Likely to the first team. It's Maryland's second consecutive year with a special teams All-American, as kicker Brad Craddock won consensus honors after last season.
Likely has one year of eligibility remaining. If he comes back to Maryland, he'll be a crucial piece in DJ Durkin's defense as the only returning starter from a unit that sometimes struggled in 2015. He'll also be one of the nation's most feared returners.
