On Monday, University of Maryland president Wallace Loh recommended changing the name of the school's football stadium from Byrd Stadium to Maryland Stadium. While Harry Clifton "Curley" Byrd did much for the school in his role as president of the university from 1936 until 1954, he was also supported racial segregation and discrimination throughout his run at Maryland.
The recommendation by Loh, which will be considered by the University System of Maryland's board of regents on Friday, not only called for removing Byrd's name, but also suggested renaming the facility "Maryland Stadium."
We're hopeful that's just a placeholder.
While other schools, including several in the Big Ten, have stadium names such as Ohio Stadium and Michigan Stadium, they're also more commonly referred to as "The Shoe" and "The Big House", respectively. Renaming Byrd "Maryland Stadium" seems unoriginal and sounds even worse when you add "Capital One Field" in front of it.
So that got us thinking about other possible names for Byrd Stadium. Or if Maryland is going to stick with "Maryland Stadium," a new nickname that could be used to refer to the Terrapins' home field.
We asked folks to submit some possible new names to replace Byrd Stadium. Here are some of the best suggestions, both practical and humorous:
Maryland Stadium is fine. Under Armour's TURTLEDOME™ would be even better.— Pete Volk (@Pete_Volk) December 7, 2015
TurtleDome is solid. So would any connection to Under Armour.
@TestudoDave "Bird Stadium"— C. Stone (@CStoneNo37) December 8, 2015
Multiple people submitted this idea.
I've always liked the shell name, personally.
@TestudoDave Crabcake Stadium. Because then it's both things we do.— Matt Gold (@GoldWhat) December 8, 2015
Crab cakes and football.
@TestudoDave Dave Neal Stadium— Tim Demers (@tdemers7) December 8, 2015
He is the Mayor of College Park. Also, obligatory:
Speaking of basketball...

@TestudoDave terrapin station— Kshap (@ShapDeisel) December 8, 2015
They do serve beer at the stadium now, so this could work.
Cluck-U-Pac could work, too.
@TestudoDave Larry David Field.— Eric Morrow (@ericmorrow11) December 8, 2015
Could also go Google Stadium, Kevin Plank Stadium or
Capital One Field at Randy Edsall Stadium— Alex Kirshner (@alex_kirshner) December 7, 2015
@TestudoDave SVP Field at Scott Van Pelt Stadium— Ryan Wormeli (@RyanWarmly) December 8, 2015
I'm betting SVP would broadcast even more from College Park if he had a stadium named after him.
This is actually a really cool idea.
What do you all think? If you could rename Byrd or give Maryland Stadium a nickname, what would it be? Tell us in the comments below.
