Barnes is the No. 97 tight end in the class of 2016 and the No. 85 player in Alabama, according to 247Sports Composite. He verbally committed to Maryland on January 24, and is the only tight end in DJ Durkin's class. The two-star recruit was previously a Memphis commit before flipping to the Terps, and also had offers from Arkansas State and Troy.
He developed a relationship with Maryland offensive coordinator Walt Bell, who held the same position at Arkansas State and was recruiting Barnes there.
Barnes will join Avery Edwards, Andrew Isaacs, Derrick Hayward and Andrew Gray at tight end for the Terps.
