Maryland basketball's biggest recruit in years is earning his keep so far this season, as Diamond Stone claimed both the Big Ten's Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards after scoring a combined 49 points in the team's victories over Penn State and Northwestern.
Stone willed the Terps to a comeback win over the Nittany Lions almost single-handedly, scoring a Maryland freshman-record 39 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
He followed that explosive performance with an understated but efficient game against Northwestern. He didn't miss a shot all day, going 4-for-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line in the Terps' easy 72-59 win.
His 13.1 points per game and 59.5 field goal percentage are second on the team, and he's scored in double-digits in seven straight games.
Melo Trimble is the last Terp to win either award, claiming Freshman of the Week honors last March and co-Big Ten Player of the Week in December 2015.
