The Terps began the 2015-2016 season as a team many expected to earn a No. 1 seed in this year's NCAA Tournament. But with just six weeks left in the season, that scenario is looking less and less likely for Maryland. The Terps have now lost three games and lack a signature win over one of the nation's best teams. To date, their most impressive win is probably against UConn at Madison Square Garden.
Maryland is currently ranked No. 11 in RPI and No. 14 in KenPom, which if using those measurements alone would place the Terps in the No. 3 or No. 4 seed portion of the bracket. But Maryland's problem isn't just that it hasn't beaten a very good team this season, but teams ahead of them already have signature wins. In order for the Terps to leap frog those teams and get back into the No. 1 seed discussion, they're going to need a near flawless finish to the regular season, in addition to a good showing in the B1G Tournament.
The Terps will certainly have some opportunities to pick up marque wins over the coming weeks. Of Maryland's last 11 regular season games, four of them are against teams currently in the top 19 of KenPom's rankings. The first of those occurs this Thursday at the Xfinity Center in College Park, when the Terps take on Iowa. The Hawkeyes are currently No. 2 in KenPom and No. 7 in the latest RPI. Iowa is also ranked 3rd in the latest AP Poll.
