How'd He Get to College Park?

Jake Layman fell in love with what was then the "Comcast Center" four years ago. He had trips planned to Florida, Louisville and Syracuse following his visit to College Park, but canceled them all after unexpectedly committing to coach Mark Turgeon's first recruiting class in Maryland on the way home from his visit. Turgeon had recruited Layman when he was coaching at Texas A&M, but the Massachusetts native said he wasn't ready to move that far away from home, and moving to the East Coast sealed it.

Career Highlight:

Dream Season:

Layman thrives at small forward, a position he should be more comfortable with offensively and defensively. He doesn't get buried behind Maryland's depth and finishes as one of its top three scorers and rebounders and becomes a first-round NBA draft pick.

2015-16 Prospectus

Layman will likely tower over anyone who guards him at the three. His shot release is high, and defenders will struggle to bother his pure stroke. It's reasonable to believe he'll shoot a higher percentage from the field because of this height differential, and get more attempts from the 3-point arc now that he'll play more on the wing.

The real gain in playing a 6'9 small forward, though, is the energy he should be able to conserve throughout the season on the defensive end. He's a pretty good defender, and with a 7' wingspan, he'll be able to get a hand in the way of anything close to the rim and in the face of shooters.

Layman is in perfect position to showcase his talents on both ends of the court.
