College basketball rankings, Week 4: Maryland holds at No. 2 in AP Top 25 ahead of North Carolina game

The Terps stay one slot from the top.

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Maryland men's basketball team is ranked No. 2 in this week's AP Top 25 poll, out on Monday. The Terps take on North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, in a game that could catapult them to No. 1 in next week's rankings.

It's Maryland's second consecutive week in the No. 2 slot. The Terps moved up from third to second in last week's ranking, after previous No. 1 Carolina took a road loss to Northern Iowa. This remains Maryland's highest ranking since its 2002 national championship season.

The Terps, overall, had a quality week to keep their ranking. They went 3-0, with a gritted-out win against Illinois State, a blowout against Rhode Island and then an easy overtaking of Cleveland State over the weekend.

This week, in addition to North Carolina, Maryland hosts Saint Francis (Pa.) at Xfinity Center on Friday night. If the Terps can get past the Tar Heels, they'll stand a good chance at moving through non-conference play without a loss.

Here's this week's Coaches Poll, also out:
