The Maryland men's basketball team is ranked No. 2 in this week's AP Top 25 poll, out Monday. The Terps received six first-place votes to No. 1 Kentucky's 59.
It's the highest ranking for Maryland since its 2002 national championship victory. The Terrapins had been No. 3, but previously top-ranked North Carolina's surprising loss to Northern Iowa pushed the Tar Heels down to No. 9 and the Terps upward. Maryland and North Carolina meet in Chapel Hill on Dec. 1.
Maryland was 2-0 for the week, with a 75-71 win against Georgetown and a 65-58 escape against Rider, both coming at Xfinity Center. Maryland started slow in both games but managed to avert a blemish with late charges in each.
This week, the Terps are in Cancun, Mexico, for probably two games in the Cancun Challenge tournament. They face Illinois State on Tuesday and, if they advance from there, will draw the winner of a TCU-versus-Rhode Island game the next night before heading back north for Thanksgiving.
