Maryland men’s lacrosse is the second-best program in the nation, according to the 2021 coaches preseason poll released by the United Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Wednesday.

The Terrapins trail only Duke University, one of four ACC schools in the top five. Maryland is tied with Syracuse for the No. 2 spot and are ranked ahead of North Carolina and Virginia.

Outside those first five schools, five of the six Big Ten teams were ranked in the 20-team coaches poll. Penn State is the closest to the Terps in the No. 6 slot, ahead of No. 10 Ohio State, No. 18 Rutgers and No. 20 Johns Hopkins.

Maryland returns senior attacker and team captain Jared Bernhardt, who was originally planning to spend his final year of eligibility on the gridiron as a quarterback at Ferris State University.

The Terps’ 2021 schedule has yet to be released.
