MM 8.24: Donovan Pines named Man of the Match for D.C. United

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

D.C. United

Former Maryland men’s soccer defender Donovan Pines put together an impressive performance in his first on-field action of 2020, earning Man of the Match honors in D.C. United’s 0-0 draw to Cincinnati FC.

In his first start this season, Pines starred in the center of United’s back three centre-back line, anchoring the defense en route to his side’s first clean sheet of the year.

Pines, who is the son of the University of Maryland’s new president Dr. Darryll Pines, showed immense confidence with the ball at his feet, completing 92 percent of his passes in his full 90 minutes on the pitch. He also won five aerial duels and made three recoveries, proving he can be a reliable presence at back at just 22 years old.

Though he did not appear in this summer’s MLS is Back Tournament, Pines’ second professional season is off to a strong start.
