With the abbreviated MLB season officially on the calendar, six former Terrapins received invitations to spring training on July 1.
Five of the players, LHP Brett Cecil (St. Louis Cardinals), LHP Adam Kolarek (Los Angeles Dodgers), INF Brandon Lowe (Tampa Bay Rays), RHP Mike Shawaryn (Boston Red Sox) and OF LaMonte Wade Jr. (Minnesota Twins), all have at least one season of experience in the Majors.
Infielder Kevin Smith of the Toronto Blue Jays also got the call to join his team’s 60-man roster, though he hasn’t made his MLB debut yet.
In the league’s 60-game season, all teams invited 60 players to spring training, 26 of which will be named to an active roster come July 23 when the first pitch of 2020 is thrown.
A number of other former Maryland players will have to forgo their 2020 seasons as the league announced all minor league games have been canceled.
