Two former Maryland baseball players are in Major League Baseball’s San Diego and Arlington, Texas, bubbles for the American League and National League Championship Series this week.
Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe hit third for the AL’s No. 1 seed in Game 1 against the Houston Astros Sunday evening, going 1 for 4 in the Rays’ 2-1 win. The Newport News, Virginia, native has been an integral component of Tampa Bay’s success, as his .554 slugging percentage and 14 homers led the team in the regular season.
Relief pitcher Adam Kolarek and the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a seven-game set with the Atlanta Braves Monday night. The southpaw has been a steady arm out of the bullpen for the league’s top team, compiling an ERA of 0.95 in 20 appearances.
After going deep in four straight games at one point and finishing in the top 10 of the A.L. in slugging, home runs, OPS and triples, Lowe is in consideration for the A.L. MVP award. Kolarek’s ERA is the lowest of any Los Angeles pitcher with more than two appearances.
