Despite losing nine games in a row to finish out the regular season, Maryland softball will be participating in the Big Ten tournament as a No. 11 seed.

The Terps will be facing No. 6-seed Illinois on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. ET, and will go on to face No. 3 Indiana in the following round, should they win.

It’s looking like a tough draw at this point for Maryland, as the Terps faced Illinois earlier this season on the road and were swept handily. The last game Maryland played against the Illini ended in five innings with a final score of 20-2, by far the team’s most demoralizing loss of the season. That’s obviously not a good outcome for any team, but some emotions could play into the game for the way Illinois took it to Maryland a month ago, with Maryland getting another opportunity at retribution against the team that clobbered them.

The tournament starts on Thursday, with the first game being played with No. 7 Wisconsin facing No. 10 Purdue at 10 a.m. ET. This will be Maryland’s first Big Ten tournament appearance since 2015, when the Terps were a No. 8 seed but lost to Penn State in round one.
