Some teams have rally hats, some have rally towels and some teams wear the same socks for good luck. But Maryland baseball has a rally squirrel — and his name is Crumbs.
Crumbs has been around for a while, but he always seems to show up right before something good happens for Maryland. Take Tuesday, for example: with the Terps down three, Crumbs shows up, Brandon Gum laces a line drive to left field, Nick Cieri ties the game with a homer and the Terps go on a four-run rally to take the lead. Coincidence? I think not!
We had an old friend drop by right before our four-run rally!

Junior outfielder Zach Jancarski said that Crumbs has been around since he was a freshman in 2015. They’re pals.

Crumbs will “eat anything in sight,” sure, but he seems to have a particular thing for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Crumbs eats my PB&Js religiously throughout the season, but I'll keep making them for him if we get the W! #FeedTheSquirrel https://t.co/m8ocbxJleY

We may never know if Crumbs and Twiggy, the waterskiing squirrel, are related, but they’ve each got sporting backgrounds.
In fact, many squirrels have found their way into the sports world. This squirrel interrupted a Phillies-Cardinals game in 2015.
We’re not sure what this one’s name is, but I’m going to name him “Superfly” after the late WWE superstar Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, because this is a textbook top-rope maneuver.
This squirrel interrupted a Week 9 matchup at Lambeau Field between the Packers and Colts last season and gave Jim Nantz and Phil Simms something to talk about other than football.

I’m going to call this little guy “Curly the Squirrel-y” because he was running around at Lambeau Field ... Curly Lambeau ... whatever.
Anyway, I’ve got to hand it to Crumbs. Unlike these other unruly squirrels who interrupt games or boring squirrels who just stand on some jet skis — actually, that’s really impressive — Crumbs brings a winning attitude with him whenever he shows up.
Maryland is 11-1 at home this season, and if you think that’s for any reason other than Crumbs ... well, you’re probably right. Enjoy your weekend, and remember, Fear the Squirrel.
