Maryland head coach Brenda Frese was named the United States Marine Corps/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year for the fourth year in a row, the team announced Thursday. Sophomore Kaila Charles was also named one of 52 All-Region nominees for the Coaches’ All-America team.
It is the sixth time Frese has won the award in her career. It’s the eighth straight season the Terps won at least 25 games, despite losing over 60 percent of their scoring from last year’s Sweet 16 squad. This year’s tournament appearance was Maryland’s eighth straight under Frese. She was one of 10 coaches to be honored, joining Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw, Mississippi State’s Vic Schaefer and Baylor’s Kim Mulkey, among others.
Charles was one of six underclassmen in the whole country to be nominated for the WBCA All-America team. The committee will select 10 of the 52 nominees to make the team. Charles led the Terps with 17.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, along with 36 blocks. Her 610 total points made her just the third Maryland sophomore to ever eclipse 600 points in one season.
Charles’ season earned her First Team All-Big Ten honors from both the conference’s coaches and the media. She also made the Big Ten all-tournament team.
