Maryland women’s basketball starts its season Nov. 13 against UMass Lowell. Until then, we’re profiling every player on the team.
Aja Ellison, junior, forward, 6’3, No. 0
Hometown: Voorhees, NJ
High School: Life Center Academy
Twitter: @AjaEllison
Recruiting Ratings: Three stars, No. 21 forward in the country
Collegiate Stats: 0.8 ppg, 0.9 rpg, .385 FG/.333 FT (32 games)
How did she get to College Park?
The daughter of a former NBA player and Terps sprinter, Ellison started playing organized basketball in 2010. She became a highly-touted recruit and decided to choose her mother’s alma mater and came to Maryland. She chose the Terps over several other good women’s basketball programs, including her father’s alma mater, Louisville.
Career highlight
Ellison scored six points and hauled in four rebounds in a 2014 game against Coppin State, both career highs. Unfortunately for Ellison, she’s been held back by injuries and a crowded roster for the past two years.
2016-17 prospectus
Ellison’s reoccurring knee issues will sideline her for the entirety of this season. She underwent another surgery done on her knee in the summer, and won’t be back in time to help this year’s team.
“When they went in in the offseason, they thought they were cleaning it up, and it was major reconstructive,” head coach Brenda Frese told Testudo Times at media day.
Ellison will be redshirted and hopes to be healthy for next year.
