Maryland basketball opens the 2016-17 season ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press Poll, released on Tuesday.
Last season, the Terps opened at No. 9. The team finished at No. 5 in last year’s postseason AP Poll.
Brenda Frese’s team brings in the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation, including four five-star players. Destiny Slocum, the team’s most-hyped freshman, will assume the starting point guard spot. She’ll join seniors Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones on what should be one of the program’s most talented team in years.
Notre Dame is No. 1 in the poll, unseating perennial power Connecticut. Baylor comes in at No. 2, followed by UConn, South Carolina and Louisville.
Only two other Big Ten teams appear in the poll: Ohio State No. 7 and Indiana at No. 23.
Maryland plays exhibition games against Bluefield State and Mary Baldwin College before opening the regular season against UMass Lowell on Nov. 13.
