Starting on Thursday, July 1 NCAA college athletes are now able to benefit from name, image and likeness as the Division I Board of Directors approved an interim policy on Wednesday.
The interim policy comes shortly after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of college athletes that the NCAA’s prohibition on compensation violates federal antitrust laws in NCAA v. Alston.
“This is an important day for college athletes since they all are now able to take advantage of name, image and likeness opportunities,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a press release. “With the variety of state laws adopted across the country, we will continue to work with Congress to develop a solution that will provide clarity on a national level. The current environment — both legal and legislative — prevents us from providing a more permanent solution and the level of detail student-athletes deserve.”
As per the new policy, college athletes can partake in name, image and likeness activities that are “are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located,” according to the release. Additionally, athletes attending schools without name, image and likeness legislation can still partake in activities as long as the actions do not violate the rules set forth by the NCAA.
College athletes will also be able to hire agents that assist in the name, image and likeness process. They will report those activities to their school.
Back in April, Maryland Athletics partnered with Opendorse which is a platform that assists college athletes with developing their brands to prepare them for this new era of college sports.
Here is a list of Maryland players and how they are partnering to benefit from the interim name, image and likeness policy.
