Maryland football’s spring game set for April 27

The Terps will start spring practice on March 26.

Maryland football will start spring practice on March 26 and hold its Red-White spring game on April 27.

This information was included on a graphic tweeted (and since deleted) by new defensive line coach Delbert Cowsette on Feb. 26, and the team officially announced the spring game date and time Tuesday.

This means practices will start the day after spring break, and the spring game will be held on Maryland Day, one of the busiest days on campus all school year and already a busy day at Maryland Stadium. Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams host Johns Hopkins in a doubleheader—the women play at 4:30 p.m. ET, and the men square off in “The Rivalry” at 7:30. With spring game attendance being low in recent years, putting the scrimmage on an already-busy day should provide a boost.

The game will start the tripleheader at noon ET, the team announced.

It’ll be the first spring practice for Mike Locksley’s staff, and in a change from recent years, there won’t be many newcomers making first impressions. None of Maryland’s 2019 signees enrolled early, so the only new additions participating will be transfer linebacker Keandre Jones and wide receiver Sean Savoy. The other transfer into the program, quarterback Josh Jackson, is still taking classes at Virginia Tech for the spring.

NCAA rules permit 15 spring practices per team, 12 of which are allowed to have contact, including the spring game. The first two practices must be contact-free, only eight can be full-contact and only three of those eight can include 11-on-11 scrimmaging for more than half of practice.
