Maryland football kicks off its season Saturday at noon in a long-anticipated matchup against the Texas Longhorns.
The season opener pits second-year head coach DJ Durkin against Tom Herman in his first game as Texas’ head coach. The Terrapins have never scored against the Longhorns in the teams’ three previous meetings, but the sides haven’t played each other since 1978, so that trend seems unlikely to continue.
Texas is the first in a long line of ranked opponents for Maryland this season, and a win could go a long way toward earning a second consecutive bowl berth, but it won’t be easy.
The numbers
Maryland: 0-0 (0-0 Big Ten), 6-7 last season
Texas: 0-0 (0-0 Big XII), 5-7 last season
All-time series: Texas leads 3-0
Odds: Maryland is a 19-point underdog
