Maryland football got 1 vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

The first edition of the Amway Coaches Poll by USA Today was released Thursday and Maryland found itself in the “others receiving votes” category.

Yes, we’re talking about Maryland football.

Here’s the kicker: DJ Durkin has a vote. I’m not here to say that he was the one coach who slotted the Terps in at No. 25, but it was definitely him. And that makes sense, especially since the season hasn’t started yet and Maryland has had a fairly positive offseason. Also, it’s not like he’s not going to vote for his own team.

This poll also illustrates the refrain that we heard over and over from head coaches at the podium at Big Ten media days last week: The Big Ten is the best conference in college football. Four Big Ten teams (No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State, No. 9 Michigan and No. 10 Wisconsin) made the top 10. Alabama was the SEC’s lone member in the top 10, though the Crimson Tide checked in at No. 1.

Maryland’s Week 1 opponent, Texas, landed at No. 23.
