Deon Jones, CB, No. 14
Weight: 195 lbs.
Hometown: Oxon Hill, Maryland
High school: Potomac
How he got to College Park
Jones is one of the highlights of Coach DJ Durkin’s first top-20 recruiting class, as one of eight incoming four-star recruits and Maryland’s second highest-rated 2017 commit according to 247Sports. Jones was the No. 3 recruit in the state of Maryland and was a top-15 cornerback in his class when he committed.
Jones hasn’t played since his junior year of high school, for Archbishop Carroll in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. He was named First Team All-WCAC, and could be a playmaker for Maryland if he can regain this form.
If Jones has finished rehab, he’s in a good position to push for playing time early. Maryland will only return three cornerbacks with collegiate starting experience, and Jones figures to start out high on the depth chart. The Terps' 4-2-5 defense calls for a nickel corner in the secondary, and Durkin doesn’t mind playing freshmen, so it is not unreasonable for Jones to push for a starting job before the end of the season.
Jones enters fall camp fully rehabbed from his injury, starting out on the second string to get reacclimated to game speed. He pushes the returners for snaps by making plays when he’s on the field, and forces Durkin to start him before too long. He impresses, and a starting job is his to lose going into his sophomore season.
This newcomer is the third JuCo corner the Terps added in the last two classes.
