Nnamdi Egbuaba prepares for a make-or-break 2017 season

Profiles in Terpage moves to a junior who hopes to finally see significant time.

Nnamdi Egbuaba

Profiles in Terpage is back for 2017. Last week, we focused on the defensive line; this week, we’re taking a look at the linebackers.

Nnamdi Egbuaba, LB, No. 31

Height: 6’0
Weight: 227 lbs.
Year: Redshirt junior
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
High school: St. Frances Academy

How he got to College Park

In 2012, Egbuaba came to America from Nigeria, where he had lived his entire life. Two years later, the three-star recruit committed to Maryland after playing high school football not too far away in Baltimore. As a senior, Egbuaba dominated high school competition, recording 105 tackles and 19 sacks.

Maryland was the only school the linebacker visited, and only two other schools made an offer. Egbuaba redshirted in 2014, and only received special teams snaps in six 2015 games. Last year, he totaled four tackles in nine games, but hasn’t yet had the dominant production he had in high school.

2017 prospectus

Egbuaba is one of many linebackers competing for playing time as more than just backups. His experience should give him a bit of an upper hand, but his lack of production thus far means Egbuaba must take a step forward to get on the field. He certainly has the talent to play a role on the defense, but now he must produce.

Dream season

Using his experience to his benefit, Egbuaba earns playing time beyond special teams and garbage time. He carves a role as a rusher during passing downs, having a breakout season in that area and becoming a trusted pass-rush weapon. Additionally, he produces enough to potentially earn a starting spot in 2018.
