Ryan Brand joined Maryland football as a walk-on, but he'll push his fellow quarterbacks

Profiles in Terpage rolls on with the junior college transfer.

Profiles in Terpage is back for 2017, and this week, we’re looking at all of Maryland’s quarterbacks. We’ve looked at almost everyone in the competition, and we’re close to the end.

Ryan Brand, QB, No. 11

Height: 5’11
Weight: 190 lbs.
Year: Redshirt sophomore
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
High school: Detroit Jesuit
Twitter: @RBrand_16

How he got to College Park

Brand was a three-star dual-threat quarterback and Elite 11 finalist in the Class of 2015. He committed to Air Force out of high school, but only ended up spending one season on the Colorado campus before transferring to the College of San Mateo just south of San Francisco. Brand spent his sophomore season at the junior college before announcing he’d transfer to Maryland at the same time his younger brother Bryce announced his commitment to the school.

2017 prospectus

Brand will be a walk-on behind four quarterbacks who all have better starting prospects than he does. The reality is that he likely won’t see the field at all this season, barring a breakdown of 2012 proportions. He can certainly contribute in the quarterbacks room and on the practice field, though. Brand’s versatility should make him a valuable scout team member who can mimic some of the more mobile quarterbacks Maryland will face in 2017.

Dream season

A breakdown of 2012 proportions does occur, but instead of a true freshman linebacker filling in, it’s Brand. The unsuspecting walk-on takes the Big Ten by storm and at least keeps the Terps competitive while he’s under center.

He’s also got a relative in the organization, but this relative doesn’t play for the team.
