Profiles in Terpage is back for 2017. Last week, we focused on wide receivers; this week, we’re looking at all of Maryland’s tight ends.
Avery Edwards, TE, No. 82
Height: 6’4
Weight: 245 pounds
Year: Junior
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
High School: Ravenscroft High School
How he got to College Park
Edwards, who was the No. 21 tight end recruit in 2014, was originally set to go to North Carolina in 2014. However, in June of that year he was charged with felony larceny and later dismissed, forcing him to spend the season training at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Maryland added Edwards in July of 2015, and he had a solid freshman season, leading all tight ends with 14 catches, 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Last year, Edwards took a step backwards, only catching one pass for 23 yards despite playing in 13 games.
Career highlight
Edwards’ best collegiate game came against South Florida in 2015, when he caught three passes for 26 yards and two touchdowns.
2017 prospectus
While Edwards' sophomore season was a step down, he still possesses the talent to contribute on the team. He gives Maryland an experienced tight end who has spent time on both offense and special teams, and with a ton of uncertainty in the passing game, Edwards has a chance to revert back to his solid freshman season.
Dream season
Edwards earns consistent playing time on offense, becoming a key target on short yardage situations and in the red zone. As Maryland expands its offense to include more tight end production, Edwards carves at an important role for the team.
Up next
This tight end shares a last name with Donald Glover’s character on Community.
