Maryland's football season starts in 63 days. Until then, we're doing a player-by-player preview of the entire roster.

Andrew Gray, tight end

Year: Redshirt sophomore
Height: 6’2
Weight: 230 pounds
High school: Chardon (Ohio)
Jersey number: 86

How Gray got to College Park

Gray, a three-star tight end from Chardon, Ohio, committed to Maryland in June 2013. He was Maryland’s first commitment from the Buckeye State since 2007, ending a remarkable dry spell. He redshirted in 2014 and then didn’t play again in 2015.

He earned one scout team player of the week honor for special teams in each of his first two years on campus.

2016 prospectus

Maryland has always had at least three tight ends ahead of Gray on the depth chart. There’s a good chance that does not change in 2016, with Avery Edwards, Derrick Hayward and Andrew Isaacs all presumably healthy and in the fold.

This is total conjecture at this point, but it seems more than possible that Gray gets some snaps on special teams this year. That’s been a big part of his scout team work for two years now, and the next logical step is that he’d be a part of Maryland’s coverage and/or return units.

What a dream season would look like

Gray becomes a special teams ace and plays a few downs on offense, too.

Next in the series...

... is a former walk-on who’s now one of Maryland’s most trusted players.
