Maryland football starts its season in 49 days. Until then, we’re profiling every player on the roster.
Tino Ellis, wide receiver
Height: 6’1
Weight: 185 pounds
Year: Freshman
High school: DeMatha Catholic
How he got to College Park
Ellis was the No. 9-ranked recruit in the state of Maryland and the No. 53 wide receiver in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed at the end of July and became one of the leaders of the "DMV to UMD" movement. Unlike that movement’s other two leaders for 2016, Ellis kept his commitment after Randy Edsall was fired, and he’ll play for Maryland this year.
Ellis attended DeMatha, where he helped lead the Stags to three straight WCAC titles and was named WCAC first-team and and Under Armour All-American his senior year. He is one of four DeMatha commits in Maryland’s 2016 recruiting class.
Career highlight
Ellis has not played yet at Maryland, so here are some high school highlights.
2016 prospectus
Due to abysmal quarterback play in 2015, Maryland’s depth chart at wide receiver is pretty unsettled after the Jacobs brothers and D.J. Moore. Ellis is in a logjam at wide receiver for the Terps, but he could earn playing time with a strong showing in training camp. Despite being only a freshman, Walt Bell may look to get Ellis involved as he will serve an important role in the future. He’s got a real chance to play early.
What a dream season would look like
Ellis proves himself in training camp and makes an impact in Maryland’s passing game. He sets himself up to become one of the Terps’ top wideouts for 2017 and beyond.
Next in the series
This defensive back nearly played for a divisional foe before flipping to Maryland.
