There are 98 days until Maryland football kicks off its 2016 season against Howard. We're profiling every Maryland player until then.
Matt Gillespie, linebacker
Height: 6'1
Weight: 241 lbs.
Year: RS Sophomore
High school: Loyola Blakefield (Md.)
How Gillespie got to College Park
Gillespie played defensive end at Loyola Blakefield High School, but converted to linebacker when he got to Maryland. There's not a whole lot of other information available on him.
Gillespie has not seen a snap in his two years with the program. He served a redshirt season in 2014 and did not get any playing time in 2015.
One career highlight so far
Earning scout team player of the week honors before Maryland's loss to West Virginia in 2015.
2016 prospectus
Gillespie plays at one of Maryland's most stacked positions, so getting any playing time this season will be tough. He might not see any snaps this season either, although there could be opportunities if Maryland blows out any nonconference teams or gets blown out by teams like Ohio State or Michigan.
What a dream season might look like
Gillespie plays his way into a role on DJ Durkin's defense and carves out a niche for himself as a sub.
Next in the series ...
A teammate thought he saw this former four-star tackle "push a defender's sternum through the back of their body."
