Minnesota QB Mitch Leidner not listed on depth chart vs. Maryland football

It appears the team will start a former walk-on instead.

When Minnesota takes the field this Saturday against Maryland football, quarterback Mitch Leidner won’t be leading the Gophers onto the field.

Leidner wasn’t listed on the depth chart Minnesota released on Tuesday ahead of this week’s game. Redshirt junior Conor Rhoda was listed as the starter in his place.

Maryland head coach DJ Durkin said at his Tuesday press conference that he’d found out the news about 15 minutes beforehand.

Leidner has completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 6.4 yards per attempt this season. Rhoda, a former walk-on, has thrown one pass this season and two in his career.

It’s unclear as of now what injury Leidner is suffering from, but he wasn’t himself in Minnesota’s loss to Iowa last week. He completed only 13 of 33 passes for 166 yards and two interceptions.

Minnesota’s passing attack is ranked No. 59 in the nation by S&P+, which has Maryland as the No. 19 passing defense.
