Maryland football added a three-star tight end to the roster as Joseph Bearns officially signed with the program Wednesday morning, the first of the day.
Bearns has a grade of 0.8377 from the 24/7 Sports Composite, ranking as the No. 75 tight end in the 2021 class and the No. 39 player in the state of Maryland.
At 6-foot-2, 245 pounds, the Baltimore native is a strong blocker, and in high school, Bearns was able to open the field for the run game. Although he is listed as a tight end, he will play more like a fullback. His athleticism and versatility allow him to play as both a traditional tight end and an H-back.
Bearns’ experience on the field will be beneficial to the Terps, who did not sign a tight end during the 2020 recruiting cycle. This is a stark comparison to the class this cycle, which has four signees at the position including Bearns.
On Feb. 1, Bearns tweeted that he received an offer from the University of Maryland. Four days later, the tight end made his verbal commitment to the Terps.
Bearns is one of three commits in the Class of 2021 from St. Frances Academy. The other two are defensive-backs Terrance Butler and ZionAngelo Shockley.
