Tayvion “Tank” Land is no longer a member of Maryland football’s 2019 class. The three-star cornerback flipped his commitment to Liberty on Tuesday night.

Land committed to the Terps in May and remained on board through a turbulent season that included head coach DJ Durkin’s firing in October. The Virginia Beach native is the No. 11 prospect in the state of Virginia and the No. 46 cornerback in the country (No. 434 overall), according to the 247Sports Composite. Until four-star wide receiver Isaiah Hazel joined the class in December, Land was Maryland’s highest-rated commit.
A flip like this—from a Power 5 school to a lower-level independent—suggests Land wasn’t a take under Mike Locksley’s staff, despite his recruiting ranking. Maryland’s 2019 class still includes three cornerbacks, as Deonte Banks and Lavonte Gater signed in December and Erwin Byrd committed in January. The Terps are slated to return starting corner Tino Ellis and nickel corners Antoine Brooks and Rayshad Lewis (and may or may not still have Marcus Lewis), but the positional outlook is uncertain for 2020 and beyond.
