Three-star tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo announced his commitment to Maryland Friday evening, shortly before his first high school game of the season.
The 19th commit in the Terps’ Class of 2018, Okonkwo is just the first Maryland commit to have participated in The Opening Finals in early July. Listed at 6’3, 224 pounds, there’s some debate whether Okonkwo is a tight end or a receiver. He’s listed as the No. 95 receiver and the No. 53 overall prospect in Georgia, per the 247Sports Composite. In College Park, he’s viewed as a tight end.
The Terps already have one tight end committed in this cycle in Maleak Bryant, but taking a second this year enables them to replace and build on what they’ll lose once Derrick Hayward graduates after this season.
Okonkwo chose Maryland over hometown Georgia Tech. With his commitment, the Terps’ recruiting class jumps up to No. 17 in the nation, per the 247Sports team rankings.
