Jones, who attends Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, is the No. 5 prospect in Virginia and the No. 68 wideout in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. He verbally committed to the Terps in August over Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Maryland has landed three wide receivers in this class, with Jones the highest-rated of the bunch. The Terps had five freshman wideouts last season, only two of whom—Tahj Capehart and Sean Nelson—saw the field, and even that was primarily on special teams. With D.J. Moore likely leaving for the NFL and Taivon Jacobs (possibly) out of eligibility, Maryland expects to return virtually no production at the position. So starting and rotational spots will be wide open, and Jones has the talent to compete.
In landing Jones, the Terps continued their recent success recruiting Virginia Beach. Maryland brought in Capehart and twin defensive tackles Breyon and Brandon Gaddy in 2017, then Jones and quarterback Tyler DeSue this cycle.
