McFarland would be a huge get for the Terps. He’s the nation’s No. 3 all-purpose back and the No. 2 prospect in Maryland, per the 247Sports Composite. McFarland would become the highest-rated recruit in Maryland’s 2017 class, supplanting four-star corner Deon Jones.
Should he choose the Terps, McFarland would be the second DeMatha player in Maryland’s recruiting class, joining four-star guard Marcus Minor. McFarland and current Terps running back Lorenzo Harrison split carries for the Stags in 2015.
Miami is the favorite to land McFarland; 67 percent of 247Sports’ crystal balls have him choosing the Hurricanes. Maryland is second with 26 percent.
It’s still unclear when McFarland will announce his decision. It’s currently a dead period for recruiting, which means coach-player contact is limited for the next month. For the time being, Maryland has a chance.
