Former Maryland men’s basketball guard Darryl Morsell announced that he will continue his playing career at Marquette.

The Baltimore native announced in April that he would be exploring all options including returning to Maryland for the 2021-22 season.

Morsell averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists per game during the 2020-21 season. His performance earned him the title of the 2021 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Morsell’s 1,090 career points rank 50th in program history and his 510 career rebounds make him one of 33 players in program history with 1,000 points and 500 boards.

Marquette is a program looking to recapture its position among the best teams in the Big East after two seasons of failing to make the NCAA Tournament.

The Golden Eagles hired former Texas and VCU head coach Shaka Smart this offseason, who also added Maryland assistant DeAndre Haynes to his staff after two seasons in College Park.

Morsell figures to have a chance at carving out a significant role with Marquette as the program has gone through a thorough restructuring with the transfer portal this offseason. The Golden Eagles have lost five players who committed elsewhere, added two and top forward Dawson Garcia recently entered the portal.
