Nearly halfway through Big Ten play, No. 15 Maryland men’s basketball tied for fourth place in the conference standings (1.5 games back).

Coming into the season, senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and sophomore big man Jalen Smith were expected to lead the way for the Terps, and they have done just that.

Smith has been all Maryland could ask for this season, acting as a swiss army knife and providing the team with an identity following the departure of Bruno Fernando last season.

The sophomore ranks first in three-point field goal percentage (56.7), second in field goal percentage (59.1), sixth in total rebounding (85) and is averaging 2.0 blocks per game, which is tied for second amongst Big Ten competitors.

A preseason Wooden Award candidate, Cowan ranks fifth in assists (40) through nine games of Big Ten play. He also has the fourth best assist/turnover ratio with a 2.1 mark.

Maryland will square off against No. 18 Iowa Thursday night, with Big Ten leading scorer Luka Garza (27.2) coming to town.
