With high expectations going into the 2019-20 season, Maryland basketball decided to switch things up with some new jerseys.
The Terps opted for a more classic look, switching from a V-neck to a crewneck, as well as using a more simple colorway on the red and white jerseys. It’s hard to tell whether the shorts got shorter or not because many players, particularly the sophomore class, love to hike theirs up high. Still, the fit definitely seems tighter. And most notably, there is a huge decrease in the presence of the beloved Maryland state flag.
While the team has received some backlash over the years for overuse of the flag (in my opinion unfairly so), it’s a Terp uniform staple. Maryland won its 2002 national championship in uniforms decked out in state pride, featuring a large emblem of it on both sides of the shorts and a neckline with all the state colors.
When the team last made it to the Sweet Sixteen in 2016, the flag was featured on both sides of the top and bottom, as well as the neckline.
Here’s a look at three of the new colorways, featuring incoming freshman Makhi Mitchell.
It’s yet to be seen what other uniforms might be featured this season, and what style they’ll follow, but given the simplicity of these, it seems probable Under Armour will have something special coming at some point. But the real question, of course, is whether Maryland will be able to make a postseason run in its new digs.
