Three days after receiving the No. 7 spot in the AP Preseason Top 25, Maryland men’s basketball came in as the No. 8 team in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll on Thursday.

The Terps are one of four teams in the poll, including No. 1 Michigan State, No. 16 Ohio State and No. 22 Purdue. Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois also received votes.

Maryland only received votes in this preseason poll over the last two years, but was ranked No. 21 before the 2016-17 season kicked off. The last time coaches ranked the team this high preseason was in 2015, when it came in as No. 3.

The Terps finished with a 23-11 record last season, losing to LSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Mark Turgeon has said that this is his deepest team yet, and the second top-10 ranking furthers the team’s expectations for 2019-20.

Maryland will open it season on Nov. 6 against Holy Cross.
