Maryland men’s basketball will head to Piscataway, New Jersey, Saturday afternoon for its first road game of 2019 as it faces the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Terps are looking for their first conference road victory of the season after a narrow loss at Purdue last month.
The Terrapins are coming off a 74-72 upset over No. 24 Nebraska at Xfinity Center on Wednesday, which served as their first win over a ranked team in nearly three seasons. Anthony Cowan Jr. led the team with 19 points and Bruno Fernando had 18 points and 17 rebounds. Yet, the most crucial basket of the game belonged to Jalen Smith, who sunk a go-ahead floater with 3.8 seconds left to seal the win for Maryland.
Rutgers hasn’t played since last Saturday, when it defeated Maine 70-55 at home. The Scarlet Knights are currently 7-5 but have played competetively in losses to Seton Hall and Wisconsin and defeated Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Eugene Omoruyi leads the team in scoring with 16 points per game.
It’s early in the Big Ten season, but with a tough schedule ahead, it would serve the Terps well to take care of business on the road.
The numbers
Maryland: 11-3, 2-1 Big Ten
Rutgers: 7-5, 0-2 Big Ten
All-time series: Maryland leads 9-3
Odds: Maryland is favored by 3.5 points
