Gatlin has spent the last nine years as the head coach at Wesleyan Christian, a school that’s less than a mile from High Point’s campus. He led the Trojans to two NCISAA championships and coached multiple Division I prospects, including current Maryland incoming freshman Aaron Wiggins.
Gatlin played at Maryland from 1983-88 alongside Len Bias and Adrian Branch, and his 649 career assists are still third in program history. He also scored over 1,000 career points, won an ACC Tournament Championship in 1984 and helped lead the Terps to back-to-back Sweet 16s in 1984 and 1985. He was a nominee in our greatest point guard in Maryland history poll last week.
The Panthers finished 14-16 overall and 9-9 in the Big South this past season, their second straight year with a losing record after posting four straight winning seasons from 2012-13 to 2015-16. Head coach Scott Cherry and the school agreed to part ways after the season ended, and the school hired longtime college coach Tubby Smith to replace him.
“I am excited to join the Panther community,” Gatlin said in a statement. “I am honored and blessed to have the opportunity to work along side the incredibly accomplished and future Hall of Fame coach Tubby Smith and all of the HPU men’s basketball coaches and staff. I especially look forward to working with all of the talented student-athletes on the HPU basketball team!”
